Subject: 318i M10 Troubleshoot uneven torque and missing? Mike?

Just had the complete tune-up with valve adjust. Could I get some pointers on where to start troubleshooting and eliminating variables, and your opinions on my search results?

The car was missing significantly when cold and in lower gears, so I had th mechanic do a full tune and asked him to DX the miss. He did a complete tune, valve adjust, new wires and plugs, etc etc.

I am getting a somewhat noticeable fluctation or surging in power when accelerating, and the car feels like it drags - sorta slow to get up to speed. (could be a new surge, but not sure as the car was missing so much before)

I also get a miss inconsistently throughout the powerband. More frequently when cruising around 3k rpm.

THe miss is much improved from before. It would happen every 10 seconds or so. Now it occurs once or twice in every 7 minutes - more when it's cold.

Distro is stock 02.

Anyway, thoughts on where to begin?

Search revealed:
1. A bad Tachometer (bouncing is the symptom here)
I do have some fluctuation. It occurs when I shift or rev, the tach will go up as I rev. When I let off, it will come down, dip below the engine rpm level, (the engine will not dip) then the tach will come back up and rest on the true rpms. I attribute this to loose gears inside the tach as it doesn't "seem" to have an effect on the engine, or be a result of the engine. No jump or bounce when a miss happens.

2. Timing.
I asked the mechanic to check the timing as a possible cause of the missing, he just looked at me funny and said he'd do the tune up.

3. Points.
I'd imagine this is something he'd check though as a request to fix the miss? I will examine in the day tomorrow.

4. COnnections on coil, condensor, tach.
This is my first priority. I know I have connection problems somewhere, would not be surprised at all if this is the cause.

What have I missed? Any thoughts on the above?

Thanks for your help

318i M10 ?

does it have a carb?, injection?, points?

are you paying this 'mechanix' -? - Stip right now if you are.

cot compression?

what are the valves adjusted to COLD?

ignition timing set to what ?

if your unable to answer these basic settings - your lost untill you learn how to do them yourself and know for sure. Each one will fuch you(and the motor) up !

fuel pressure ?

gas quality?

......water in gas?

......age of gas ?

Sorry, it's an m10 straight out of a 85 318i.

LJetronic, 1.8l fi. Thanks c.d.

I cannot answer these q's

cot compression?
what are the valves adjusted to COLD?
ignition timing set to what ?

Didn't do the work on it myself, and haven't taken a look yet. I've had to drive the car all weekend - we are down one cuz the other is in the shop too. I'm hoping that by troubleshooting this issue, I will learn to handle these items on my own.

It could be many things. Get the Bently book for an E30 and start at the beginning. Check the basics, compression, valve adjustment, proper cam timing, ignition timing, fuel pressure, fuel volume, etc.

It could be something as simple as a plugged fuel filter, or as major as a bad ignition module, fuel pump, etc.

Something like this is difficult to diagnose over the web, especially if you don't have up front info. Check the basics first, then repost your results. You will get better feedback with more complete information up front.

L jet 1.8 with its ljet ??
the sympotms looks like a bad boot from the airlflow meter to the throtle body...leaks or crack in there will cause all kind of bogus to the injection system. worth a check.
who made the wiring ? could be messed up as well. loose plug/prongs,...
