Subject: McQueen’s Porsche 908/2 to be Sold at Auction

Perhaps the greatest actor in a generation, the late Steve McQueen was no slouch behind the wheel of a race car either. McQueen was of course the driving force behind the 1971 classic Le Mans, doing much of the driving seen in the movie himself.
One of the most memorable rides from that movie is this stunning 1970 Porsche 908/2. McQueen’s personal car, the Porsche being prepared for auction this summer at an exclusive Bonhams & Butterfields event in Monterey, California, and is sure to be the star of the event. Even more impressive than its history in the movies, the 908 was driven by McQueen and Formula 1 driver Peter Revson in the 1970 running of the 12 Hours of Sebring. The tandem narrowly missed winning the race when passed up by none other than Mario Andretti during the closing laps of the race.
The 908/2 boasts a 3.0-liter eight-cylinder boxer engine which is good for about 350 horsepower and speeds of over 200 miles per hour if you’ve got the stones to push it there. With pedigreed exotic metal continuing to push against the boundaries of good sense at recent auctions, we can only assume that the McQueen Porsche will go for a mint.

If I'm not mistaken, McQueen ran that race with a cast on his foot from a previous motorcycle accident. Which he duct taped during the race.

what a great movie. i have always wondered how they got the actual driving shots to be realistc.

the slow mo scenes of the crashes are incredible.

is it just me, or do the old can-am and le mans cars from the 70's just look a whole lot nicer to the eye than today's cars?

recommendation - to any of the young folks on this board who haven't heard of the move "Le Mans", RENT THE DVD!

Awesome. Huge McQueen fan, although I had trouble making it through Le Mans, and I am a big racing fan...

I think I had worked at like 6AM that day, though, and was probably watching it after midnight...

Steve McQueen is awesome.

The Great Escape is his best movie (IMHO).

Bullit is just OK. The car chase scene isn't what everyone said it was (sold as one of the top 10 car chases ever - whatever!).

But - Steve McQueen's Ferrari (1963 250GT) - one sweet car

Sweetness

The Great Escape IS great but his role in that is a bit typical... in Bullit he CREATED the anti-hero cop that we see everywhere today. Super minimal and realistic acting. And man, as a San Franciscan, that car chase will forever be one of the greatest in my heart.

My Dad used to race dirt bikes in the deserts ( Barstow / Lancaster ) of California in the late 60's. McQueen was a regular on the hare scrambles races every Sunday. He was a great rider the old man sez.

If you haven't seen it, you have to check out the video for Sheryl Crowe's song "Steve McQueen"... which has obvious nods to various movies... including the VW that repeatedly appeared in the chase scene in Bullit... plus some great shots of cars and her.

I think this address will take you there: http://www.vh1.com/video/play.jhtml?id=1583044&vid=26514

I so wish I could find her with two flat tires while the '02 is running right.
