here's the old starter from my car-
notice where it was pummeling the block, and
how the seam in front shows rust from fretting.

The bolt on the back had worked just a little bit loose.

I was kind of surprised- I was never really convinced that the
rear bracket mattered that much.

one point of view is that we know more/are smarter than the factory was 40 years ago. maybe this is an american, institutionalized attitude based on the former, pathtetic standards of american cars.

another is that the factory always knows best, and only compelling reasons are applicable when changing the factory setup. this theory gives due credit to the design philosophy of the company that gave us the motto " the joy of driving". there is no compelling reason to delete the starter support bracket.

my car is a BMW.

always seemed obvious to me, that it'd be wrong to just have that heavy starter hangin there on its own and only bolted in from one side, so mine is still there...

this upgrade is on my car.

strong indeed are my feelings on this issue- i installed the correct m3 support bracket underneath my existing tii throttle body support. there is about 1" difference in length; it mounts to the same hole in the block so i filed it down to about half thickness and painted.

bmw want you to use it.

Well, I always put it on, too- just not tightly enough, in this case!

Volvo, Jaguar, and various and sundry other manufacturers used the same
starter- and BMW was the only one to bracket it's bum.

And yeah, I made a support for the S14 starter, too.
Just seemed like a good idea...

Something tells me that a Volvo or Jag might have a smoother idling engine that would also be given less abuse than the carbed M10....

I love my M10, but she sure ain't a Jag!
