Subject: gasket sealant on distributor housing

74tii-
Just got the head back from the machine shop and was going to start putting some parts back on. At the shop they removed the distributor housing to rebuild the head( I forgot to)
Anyway read the archives about sealants, but didn't see where, if anyone puts any sealant around the distributor housing.
It' a nice thick gasket that goes on, but was wondering since there are passages, if the majority does or does not put any sealant on the housing..
just don't want it leaking later on. any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

I've put a thin bead of rtv on three of them, haven't leaked yet.

You are aware that one cap screw uses a gasketed washer, ok?

Still have no idea and sorry this is fun at my expense, but I'm using the same bolts, not screws, with the same washers that came off of the housing.
Now if the washers the so called "gasketed washers" and the bolts are called "cap screws" then I learned something, but the washers don't look any different than any other wave washer. and if they are so called gasketed washers than I would have expected sometype of material other than metal..
One should learn you can't let your guard down on here.

No jokes...there is a 10mm head bolt that does not use a regular wave washer. It uses a sleeve-type gasket washer. It should say something about it in your manual. It's # 15 below (although it's not a rubber type o-ring).

but seriously, what's going to happen if that washer isn't there? I guess it's just going to leak?

i've used regular washers on all the bolts holding the distributor housing on and haven't had any leaks

usually i put permatex stuff on there to seal, but i think rtv/silicone will work fine

just get all the bolts threaded in and the gasket situated nicely before torquing down

I also have a small leak at this point. Is it advisable to replace just the gasket washer or will I need to remove the housing, change the gasket and re-torque

your are right,It may very well leak and thank you all for showing the diagram.
I don't like re-work an now that I know it exist, will check and see if I can find one around town. I have order on some other stuff with Max, so maybe I can get this washer added.

thanks again..

If you have clean threads, you can just use a little RTV on that bolt-
it'll usually seal just fine. The washer can be installed any time, though,
so if it starts leaking, you can easily fix it later.
I've never seen it for sale separately- it comes in a head kit...
