it wasnt a stuck caliper at all. i have new billet stub axles in the car. with the VW rear caliper and carrier removed i can literally move the rotor/hub a small amount from the slop between my stub axle and my drive hub. also, when i removed the retaining nut i got a slinky of stripped threads that came from the nut. i reused the old castle nuts and perhaps that was my mistake. i cleaned them up and painted them as they looked fine. so it looks like i need a new tii hub and castle nut. its hard to believe but i think there was enough slop in it to allow the wheel to move enough to wear down the inside pad.
the good news is the billet stub axle appears fine. i imagine its a harder material than the hub splines. glad to discover it now rather than half way to dayton oh
