If the torque requirement is higher than your wrench, you can use your weight on a breaker bar by calculating how far from the nut you have to stand to generate the requisite torque.

For example, if you weigh 150 lbs and the required torque is 300 ft lbs, you must stand two feet from the nut being torqued.

cheers

Attached is how Boeing figures you to perform torques, especially with higher than normal limits using some math and torque adapters.

Hope it helps,

Steve,

Yup, I use a torque wrench, and an extender and calc it. Tried by gut feel one time, and it was tight, but obviously wasn't tight enough, and it got loose and stripped.

Never did it the other way, and overtightened it. But gotta give the BMW engineers credit to figure how tight exactly to make that big F'n nut.

if your nut is fuched, and the threads of the
stub axle compromised, and the splines
were runing loose, and your splines on both the
stub axle and hub are worn - you need all new
parts and start over again - or just redo it after
a few 100 or 1000 mileswith your method.

I use the length of the bar to calculate the lbs delivered, and stand on the extender bar. Or, if I grovel appropriately, my friend's shop will let me borrow their 3/4" torque wrench.

Yup. Fat old me on 2' of extension= 400+ ft/lbs.

And 2 more things-
grease (or anti- seize) the nut pressure surface and threads well,
and then do it again after a few months.

Just because.

"Really tight. Tighter than that."

yup.

I use the same method Mike and others describe - weigh myself, do the math, and stand on the bar at the correct distance. If your weight is accurate, and you do the math properly, and stand at the proper distance, this method is every bit as good as using a Big Torque Wrench.

Torque is not complicated - force times distance. Torque wrenches make it easier and faster to do, but they are not required if you can do math.
