I keep compulsively looking up home biodiesel setups and I can't help thinking about having a cheapl-fueled BMW on the side. Has anyone driven or owned one of these?

No, but if it were in THIS car, folks would go nuts trying to buy it from you!

The E21's fuel tank configuration should work pretty well for a bio/diesel conversion, too - it's actually two tanks, joined by a large-diameter hose that crosses below the driveshaft. Should be pretty easy to split the tanks, using one for regular diesel and one for bio, with fuel pumps & level senders in both, and a heating coil in the bio side connected to the engine's cooling system.
As light as E21's are, I'd think both performance and economy should be pretty good............. |
From the research that I've gathered, if you make biodiesel the right way, you don't need to do the dual tank thing. If you buy certain home biodiesel kits, you don't need to make any modifications to a diesel car, nor do you need to mix the biodiesel with regular diesel.

As for the M21 swap, I would REALLY like to stick one in a 2002. Power-to-weight would be great and running on home-brewed biodiesel would kick ass. _________________ ClayW

I owned an '86 524td for 5 years back in the early '90s. Did a lot of work on the motor- Had Dinan engineer an intercooler and cranked up the boost a bit. It had gobs of torque, as expected from a turbo diesel, but overall economy was a bit of a disappointment. I got 28 MPG, hill or dale, stop-and-go or freeway. This is old school technology, with mechanical injection, individual injectors, etc., far from the modern diesels of today. I loved the car, but it smoked quite a bit under a load. _________________ Chris B.
