Has anyone modified their oil breather. I'm trying to put together something that isn't going to let the vapors mess my engine compartment up. I've got sidedrafts, and you can see my engine compartment that is coming together on my blog. I'd like to do something a little trick.

There are several options.

Some folks just take a long hose and point it down out out past the tranny to let the breather vent out underneath the car. I find that is messy, though.

Some just put a small filter like I did on my white 70 (first pic below).

Others have redirected it into a can or even a washer bottle reservoir!

Some are even more clever/clean by redirecting it into a Turbo canister.

You can get as creative as you like.

...this photo is an original 2002turbo vent routing to the air filter
housing - like venting to the original carb's air filter

I hesitate using the 'breather "filter" ' method as the
filter tends to be ignored, collects dirt, creates oil vapors and
attracts dirt - basicly bad for crankcase breathing.

Go to racer supply catalogs for various collection bottles
and catch cans.

You can get catch cans on ebay for cheap and they look pretty cool.

I don't like a floor mess which is what a road tube will give you. I have no leaks on my garage floor.

I built an oil separator of same technology as on later cars like the S14 and return the oil to the crankcase. My intake is clean! You will find a lot of oil consumption is oil thrown out the vent breather.

It can't be a good thing to vent crankcase vapors into the atmosphere, and it won't hurt your motor to vent into one of the carbs. Unless you have a serious blowby problem (not likely with a new motor), the worst problem you will have is some extra cleaning to do periodically with one of your air filters.

Here is an example showing a single sidedraft with Ramflow air filter that I used to have on my motor.

everyone need to keep in mind the major issue....at the track....if you rev above 7000 rpms is that with the stock location you will blow out about 1 quart per session.

this is why pretty much all the race cars here on the west coast and the skidmark guys back east also have blocked off the flawed stock location and added a extension, baffle etc....

see my site.
http://bmw1602.lostbrazilian.com/v1/store.php

If you keep your revs below 7k, the stock location with a small tank should be fine...but if your tracking your car alot and staying at high rpms for a long time you pretty much have to change to stock location or bring alot of oil to the track with you.
