Subject: Tyres in Australia - what are the options please ?

Hi All,
My first post, I'm pleased to have found a forum dedicated to the 2002.
Having purchased a '73 2002 tii, I need tyres.
Can't seem to find anything that is considered decent in the stock size of 165HR 13, Chinese Kingstar..........no thanks.

Doesn't appear to be anything available in 175/75 13 either. would prefer not to go to anything wider unless there's no alternative.

Can anyone from Australia please let me know of an alternative or two. As I live in Tasmana, I expect to have to order.
Thanks in advance. I'm really looking forward to getting the car on the road. Tyres are imperative !

Welcome Richard, there's a few Aussies here so plenty of home-grown advice on offer if you need it, as well as a mountain of searchable info in the archives.

As for tyres you've probably noticed that 185/70's are fairly easily to obtain, a lot of 02ers run them on their 13 inch rims, me included. There's no clearance issues if you want to take that route. But if you want the more correct 165's or 175's for originality's sake and easier steering, I do know for a fact that they're available from several non-dodgy manufacturers. You just need to ring around in order to find someone who stocks them or is willing to order them in. There's gotta be provisions for classic cars in Tassie, home of the Targa and, I hear, a lot of Australia's classic cars!

By the way is your new '73 Tii the yellow one from QLD?

- Sam.

Richard...

As Sam said, Welcome! If you'd like me to get you knot the Victorian 02 Register feel free to send me an email - cmorriso(at)bigpond.net.au

At the moment we're trying to get up an Australian 02 Register but BMW are a bit annoying to deal with. Should be a good way to connect all the 02 owners around Australia. Do you make it over to the mainland very often?

Sorry i cant shed any light on your tyre issue - all 15" here, where theres a few more tyre choices.

Cheers,
Tom

Hi Sam and Tom,
Thanks for the welcome.
Sam, I did purchase the yellow 1972 ( first registered in Oz in 1973 ) 2002tii from Qld, however it is waiting for an alternator to arrive from the USA before it can leave for Tassie.

Sam, if you are able to be specific with regards to sources and types of tyres in the original size of 165/80 13 or 175/75 13 or even 175/70 13, it would save me some time.
I've called all the tyre places in Hobart for a nil result, as well as Tyresplus Eastland in Melbourne from whom I usually purchase Michelins in the Classic Tyre range for two old ( err, cough, cough ) D series Citroëns.

The 2002 tii will be transported to Tassie as soon as practicable, however, whilst I've managed to track down some 175/70 13 Pirelli 3000 in QLD, the trnasport company will not allow them to be shipped in the boot of the car. I checked around a couple of other transport companies and they have the same policy.

Tom, I do get to the mainland a few times a year, usually to Melbourne ( my favourite Oz city ). I will be making a trip in the next 4-8 weeks as I have to pick up parts in Ballarat and see a mate in Bendigo amongst other things.

Good to see that tii has gone to a 02Faq board member! Are the 38,000 k's (?) total k's the car has travelled or has it clicked over once before? It looked like a great buy - I was eyeing it off when it was sold at Bonhams. What are your future plans for the car?

Anyway, let us know when your in Melbourne and we can bring all the 02 owners together for a beer and 02 talk.

Cheers,
Tom

Hi Tom,
The speedo is in miles and undoubtedly has gone round at least once. I too had eyed it off in the Bonhams auction, but at the time didn't want to bid or attend.
There are a number f things to attend to, both in the cosmetics and mechanical sense. The odd dent here and there, nothing is perfect. There are parts missing, like the front bumper rubber over riders and a few other small things.
It's not quite a bargain, but a decent base to work from in order to end up with a better car. I'll reserve my views until I have actually become tactile with the car.
Will keep in touch and let you know when I'm coming over, would be a pleasure to meet other owners.

With respect I beg to differ, this tyre is only available in Australia in 15" in the Michelin Classic Tyre range. The original wheel size is 13", the tyre size being 165R.

Googling will not reduce the size of the tyre.
I currently own two cars which have these tyres fitted, they are 15".

If there is no vintage tyre store in Australia order a set although spendy the tyre is the CORRECT speed rated 165HR13 used back in the day 130 mph. There may be others but this is the one I know. Coker tire is the vintage tire hq here in the states. My 02 cents. Apx 224.00 usd plus tubes.

Spendy ? I'd suggest very expensive.
$224US per tyre, PLUS postage to Australia of $120US PER TYRE, no I don't think so.
It's easy to suggest others to spend up, however there is a point of expense v use and practicality.
Thanks for your suggestion.

Now is there anyone from Australia, who can suggest a practical and workable alternative, please ?

Richard if you want the period Michelin XAS I know of two tyre places in Melbourne that might have them and others like it.

The first is Antique Tyres, a well known place here for hard to find old tyres.
http://www.antiquetyres.com.au/tyres.html

Second is Stuckey's, they do motorsport tyres but I'm fairly sure they have that stuff as well.
http://www.stuckey.com.au/

If they don't have what you're after keep looking. Both Bridgestone and GT Radial list those tyre sizes as offered - and would be cheaper than the classic Michelins - but it's a matter of finding out if anybody actually has them.

BTW I'm a huge fan of the Deesse, I've vowed to buy one in a couple years time. Visions of old French films where the Champs-Élysées is just lined in them, one after the other...what a beautiful sight.

Hi Sam,
S'pose I should've mentioned they also were in the first wave of phone calls - no joy. Apart from Vintage tyres computer being down, they also suggested the 165HR13 could be imported from the USA ( Coker Tires ) at great expense.
Stuckeys, trying to be helpful ( speaking to Jeff, he's a good bloke ) can come up with a Michelin, a 165/80 13 in a Michelin XM1 similar pattern, which whilst not strictly correct should be able to do the job. The tire by the way wasn't even listed in Stuckeys list and Jeff only found out about them by calling Michelin personally.
End result will be that I will order a set of those and be bloody thankful I can get 'em !

On my '73 '02, I have 165/80 R13 tyres which look close to the originals without breaking the bank. In the US, Kumho have tyres these size at US$44 each.

Aha, Kumhos eh. I had no luck with them down here in Tasmania. Didn't have the suggestion made on the mainland either.
Thanks for the heads up, will probably try for the Michelins, but if that doesn't work out, then the Kumhos at least would be a decent fallback position.
Don't suppose you happen to have a piccy of the tread profile at all ?
