Subject: What are my options?

I am building a turbo 02 to MY liking but was thinking of what class it might be in if I were to get into racing. Any ideas?

Specs will be:

bored to 91mm forged flat tops with ~8.5 cr
dual springs, oversized intake and exhaust valves
292 cam, 318 intake mani
Holset HX35
SDS tuning
big brakes all around
coilovers
rollcage.

I hope to put down ~280. With that said, IF in the future, I wanted to get into racing my 02, what class would I be running in? Please dont say "if you wanna race the 02, build it for a specific class" because I might not ever race the 02.

Don't you want to do lower degree cam with a turbo motor? I seem to recall the factory turbos coming with a 262 or something like that...

A stock cam may be better for you than a knife-edge one.

Also, I seem to recall the HX35 being a little big for an M10, and the Holset HX30 (more rare) being a better match. pinepig on this board is running an HX30, and has had very impressive results with it.

I have followed this thread since the beginning (almost) and have asked a lot of questions regarding the cam topic. feel free to browse this thread from the beginning (link above is page 12 of 13). The info from E30tech has helped in my decision. IXer on that forum seems to have a massive wealth of knowledge when it comes to turbo builds.

Also if the cam has been tried and tested, why not use it? N8, the OP, seems to really like it!

So...what class would the car be in?

The class that your car would be in would depend on the governing body that you are racing under. I am assuming that you are talking about road racing and not autocross or drag racing. Knowing that you are doing significant modifications to it, I would say that you would be in an open class, up there with V8's and such, something like SP or Super Production. Most classes limit what you can and cannot do to the motor. Adding a turbo and all the aftermarket FI might put you into a major mod's class. If so, you might be at the low end of that class in terms of handling unless you go with an all out tube frame chassis and fully adjustable suspension.

That said, if you are really serious about racing your '02, go to some races and see where the '02 is racing (usually E Production & Improved Touring B for SCCA) and then build it to one of those classes. Should you build it without consulting any rule books you run the risk of building a car that you cannot race without more significant modifications or changes to comply with the rules of the class you have chosen.

Yeah, Mike's right-
club racing is not turbo- friendly,
partly because you can build enough power
into a small package to really kill yourself dead.

Up here, you'd end up Super Production M, or Radial Sedan, weighing
probably north of 2600 lbs... neither a great place to be in a 2002.

Build a turbo as a track- day play car, and then if you decide to race,
get some rule books and start there...

Toby
in E Production, uncompetitively...

Thanks everyone for the responses. Toby, your answer is more what I was looking for, in terms of where I would stand with what my plans are. More than likely what I would do is buy an E30 and go spec racing with it...since everyone is pointing towards a "no way in hell I would be competitive" class for my 02.

Thanks again for the responses and insight. Im not big into road racing a car...yet!!!

Thanks Mike for the input...It seems that my plans will continue towards a street terror car/weekend toy/HPDE machine. I dont think I could be competitive at those levels Mike, and a tube chassis is more than I care to do.

All input is much appreciated.
