I keep compulsively looking up home biodiesel setups and I can't help thinking about having a cheapl-fueled BMW on the side. Has anyone driven or owned one of these?

No, but if it were in THIS car, folks would go nuts trying to buy it from you!

I've got an '86 524td and I think pretty highly of it. Beleive it or not it is much more refined than the W123 Mercedes diesels. The power response lets you know that it is still a BMW. And how can you not like the E28 chassis. If you get one just make sure you never let it run hot or the head will pretty much be toast. Also, change the timing belt if you don't know when it's been done last. The engine is a M20 derivative, so a snapped timing belt will have similar results. All in all it's a pretty decent car. However the claims of getting 40mpg+ are pretty outrageous unless you do 55mph across Kansas.

Subject: Been thinking about the possibility of a 524td in an E21

with biodiesel capability recently - using a 323 M20 front crossmember, the 524td should be a mechanical bolt in. There was a complete E28 524td at the Rancho P&P a year or so ago - kicking myself for not pulling the engine and fuel system.

The E21's fuel tank configuration should work pretty well for a bio/diesel conversion, too - it's actually two tanks, joined by a large-diameter hose that crosses below the driveshaft. Should be pretty easy to split the tanks, using one for regular diesel and one for bio, with fuel pumps & level senders in both, and a heating coil in the bio side connected to the engine's cooling system.

As light as E21's are, I'd think both performance and economy should be pretty good.............

From the research that I've gathered, if you make biodiesel the right way, you don't need to do the dual tank thing. If you buy certain home biodiesel kits, you don't need to make any modifications to a diesel car, nor do you need to mix the biodiesel with regular diesel.

As for the M21 swap, I would REALLY like to stick one in a 2002. Power-to-weight would be great and running on home-brewed biodiesel would kick ass.

Subject: If you're looking for a 524td engine, it's a little known

fact that those engines were installed in Lincolns back when the 524td's were new...Ford only built 1200 or so so they're not easy to find...one of my co-workers had one lurking in her "back 40" but unfortunately it's long gone... Those crankshafts do very well in hot M20 gas engines as they're VERY sturdy...

I owned an '86 524td for 5 years back in the early '90s. Did a lot of work on the motor- Had Dinan engineer an intercooler and cranked up the boost a bit. It had gobs of torque, as expected from a turbo diesel, but overall economy was a bit of a disappointment. I got 28 MPG, hill or dale, stop-and-go or freeway. This is old school technology, with mechanical injection, individual injectors, etc., far from the modern diesels of today. I loved the car, but it smoked quite a bit under a load.
