I would classify myself as amateur body guy too. But I have found from a few older car restos that underbody rust can originate from the inside. Have you pulled carpets and taken a look at the interior tub?
I tried a chemical rust remover once long ago and vowed never again. As I recall, it was messy, involved chemical burns, elbow grease, and still didn't remove all the rust. Maybe there is stuff that works now, who knows.
In typical job, I try to mechanically remove the rust (rotary wire brush, spot blaster, grinder, and/or sawzall+welder), spot apply POR-15 to react with any stray cancer cells, acid etch prime & finish coating.
I recall a thread a few months ago where folks were not impressed with long term performance of POR-15. Jury's still out with me. _________________ 67 Caribe 1600

Remember, POR 15 only works on rust, not on clean metal. SO if you clean it completely, youre better off to use a good rust preventative primer (rted-lead for example). If you only get the surface rust off, POR 15 will attack the remaining rust and neutralize it. _________________ Original Owner, Malaga 1973 tii, unrestored.
