Subject: Paint choices

Hello all,
I am in need of your opinion.
I have a 74 sahara Tii, and is ready to be painted in the next couple of days. It is completely stripped down and ready to go.

I dont think I want to paint it a custom color, so I'm looking for some insight to what colors suit a 2002 best.

Personally Im stuck between two ends of the spectrum...
anthrazite/polaris or mintgrun

I'm also interested in a color that could possibly fetch me a better resale value..

What do you think?

Thanks for reading!

Keep it original. Sahara is one of the best colors out there. Do otherwise and you may regret it!!!

mintgrun will grab more grins and get more attention than any color you may consider...if you want to just blend into the crowd then keep it original or polaris

Are you painting the engine bay, trunk, door jams etc?? Personally, if you change the body color, but not those other "hidden" bits I think any color shift looks kind of silly. However, if you're doing the whole nine yards, the world is your oyster. I'd have to recommend picking a color that you'll be happy with vs. worrying about resale though.

Sahara is one of the great timeless colors, I wouldn't change it. That said; it I were to do a complete color change on an '02 I would pick a factory color that is truly timeless like my cousin Matt's 045 Arktis Blau Metallic '74 tii....

Mint Grun is great if the '70's colors stay in fashion forever. I like it but it's not for everyone.

IMHO in the long run you'd please more potential buyers by keeping the color original.

that is a cool green, I like it. Agree colors are personal, how can one give advice? Personally, I like the not so intense colors, like that green. Really not like the flourescent colors, eg: inka, mintgrun, golf. Malaga is just all right barely. Even Polaris tends to be ... not too exciting.

Sorry, Sahara is.... well... in my opinion... very pedestrian. I've known people that have dumped perfectly kick ass cars, because of the color...yeah it was sahara!

Changing colors, if not done completely can actually devalue the car, extreme or non factory colors can do the same. These cars are not collector items, they are still given away, resale is the last thing that should be going to anybody's mind! They are fun cars, that's all!

Debating the same thing for my '73; today (I repeat: TODAY) I am leaning toward schwarz. Seems to be among the rarest of 2002 colors (according to McCartney) and I agree with you on sahara...just doesn't inspire (IMHO). Schwarz with some nice Alpinas or Panasports in bright silver is what I have my eyes on. ..today.

I have a Sahara car myself, and more than once have toyed with changing it to a more "exciting" color. However, the one in the photo attached has encouraged me to keep it original color, but just do it really nicely and cleanly. IMHO, this is a killer looking '02

1. I think if you want the paint to NOT diminish the value, keep it original. Period.

2. I'm a guy that hated Sahara 4 weeks ago, but bought a Sahara 02 3 weeks ago.
I went to see the car because its so clean and sound, even though I didn't like the color too much.

Upon seeing it, my opinion changed by about 40%. By now, I love the color and wouldn't consider changing it. In good condition, sahara can be a very rich color. In poor condition it's terrible.
It isn't inspiring and isn't intended to look like it's going fast at a stand-still like the bright colors on exotic cars. But, it is very clean looking, and can be accented well. I've got gold weaves that look great on it. Coastal can collaborate that story.

I know mintgrun is rare and kind of sought after, but really it's a gross color imho. It's VERY 70's, and will go in and out of fashion. Basic colors are safer, but basic. Sahara is a color of the time that won't offend, without being black, or white.

If I were to change colors on a different car (or one in need of paint), I'd go with a non-factory color metallic paint since then it'd be custom, and trying to stay true to original would be a moot point.

I have a 74 sahara tii and I had it repainted sahara. When I see my car in a parking lot, you would be suprised how much sahara stands out against the other cars. My first 02 was a 75 sahara Euro spec 1802 when I was stationed in Germany so I'm partial to Sahara.

Sahara looks great when the paint is in good condition. Either way, if you are worried at all about resale value, the 02 crowd seems to really appreciate original colors, even if it's not the original paintjob.

Personally, I'd keep it Sahara. If you don't really want a Sahara car (you might decide you like it after the paint is done!), paint it and sell it. Then look for an original Polaris or Mintgrun car.

My first BMW was a Sahara 1969 1600 with the original paint. I didn't really like it to begin with, but I ended up loving that color....even with the 30+ year old paint.

There is a mintgrun square taillight here in town that looks GREAT! The black plastic grills against the green work very well.

Sahara has never done anything for me, so my vote is mintgrun or polaris silver. German cars look outstanding in silver and it would be a good "resale color".

As long as you get a good quality paint job, keep it a 2002 color, and paint the engine bay, nobody will really care if it is the original color of the car.

Polaris, Atlantik, Golf, Schwartz... or just leave it Sahara. There are a lot of nice choices and most of them reflect personal taste (at the time). What are your priorities - staying original, making a statement, or choosing a color you really like? Sahara is probably your best long term choice - originality, resale, etc. FWIW, my last 4 02s all started life painted Sahara. Two were repainted by POs (Maisgelb, Malaga) and the other two are still Sahara. I have hated Sahara for many many years but I'm finally starting to accept the possibility that it might be an ok color... or it may just be my fate to own a Sahara 02. Good luck with your choice.

I obviously like it--as has been stated, it's not flashy but looks great when nice and clean--also it doesn't show dirt. Many's the time I've just wiped off the chrome & hubcaps, cleaned the glass and it looks great from 20 feet unwashed.

If you're bound and determined to change the color, make sure you use a factory color that's correct for the year--i.e. don't use Nevada on a squarelight, or Jadegrun on a roundie...

mike

PS--I like Nevada too!

I like Mintgrun. Then again, the 72 is Golf and I'm putting stripes on the 75. One of the great things about the '02 is that it can carry the range of colors without being to bizarre looking.
