more bugs per mile than any modern cars?
I'be been cleaning the buggers off my 02 windshield for 30 years and it never seems this bad on our other cars.

Then there is the top edge of ther front, that 2" piece that is just below the hood is a major fly swatter.

My E28 seems just as bad as the '02. I must get used to them as I drive because it always seem worse the next day. ;-)

Yeah our cars have the aerodynamics of a brick.

no.... the bugs are in shock seeing a 2002 coming up the road,
and even more shocked that it's still running after
all the hacks that have botched it up,
so the bug forgets to duck and has his
arse mashed before yer eyes.
Can't blame the bug .

Good Luck.

Have to disagree.

I think bricks have the aerodynamics of a 2002! Wind tunnel tests prove it! The original designer of Bricks found that by removing wheel wells and fender skirts the brick is more slippery than the old 02. Prove it yourself. Throw a brick and throw a 2002. Bet the brick will travel farther 4 out of 5 times!

I have an idea for the paint part of the car. How about putting on some of those removable thin clear plastic tapes that use static to keep em glued on like the race car drivers use for their visors. Maybe someone here knows of a place to get it in small amounts, or bulk. I think 3M tm makes it. The BMW/Mini dealer I was at had a person installing the paint protection stuff on the front end of a Mini.

There's an easy fix, though-

get one of those clear bug- guards from Whitney's or something.

You know, the ones that stick up 6" in front of the hood,
and say 'Bubba' or something like that?

The windshield on my Jeep was a lot worse. It killed bugs like nobody's business.

It also collected rock chips regularly. I probably went through six or seven windshields over the years (in Utah you couldn't have a cracked windshield come inspection time).

Where do you get new ones and how much are they?

not trying to hijack a thread, but related, I got more than my share of bird droppings on my 74 amazon green 02, when it was parked, than the other colors I've had, so the flying bugs & birds just don't like us.. or they think green is the ground ?

I believe bugs qualify as part of the meat group in a well rounded diet. With the skyrocketing price of food these days you could probably save some money if you put them to good use. I believe they make good crunchies on salads.

Sorry, there still available.... Any decent glass shop worth their ____ can get you one. Though I've had fitment issues with anything but OE ones which are also still available... Non tinted (like for the early early cars), and normal lightly green tinted, both available from your local dealer, OR Maximillian Importing, OR Blunt....

#51 31 9 558 352 = non tinted
#51 31 1 813 605 = lightly green tinted

note... the dealer doesn't charge any shipping if you pick it up there!

Subject: Wasn't until my wife got a '96 Sebring ragtop that I noticed

how much difference the slope of the glass makes, both on bug-splats and rock chips. A drive across CA's central valley on a summer evening would leave my '02s windshield almost opaque, but her car would be nearly splatter free after the same drive. I've replaced a couple of windshields on both the '02 and and the E21 due to "sandblasting" from thousands of tiny rock chips, but the Sebring's glass was in great shape after 6 years.

One other factor where rock chips are concerned - a glass guy told me a few years ago that windshield glass is much "softer" than it used to be, so it chips a lot easier when pebbles or big sand particles hit. The change is apparently due to pedestrian/cyclist survivability requlations - softer glass collapses easier if a pedestrian is hit and thrown up over the hood and into the windshield, resulting in fewer and less extensive injuries.
