Subject: THERMOSTATIC AIR CLEANER????

the smog guys say my thermostatic air cleaner is disconnected.. and as far as i can tell from my manual to the internet there is no such thing as a thermostatic air cleaner. its a tube (bout 1in dia.) coming out of a diaphragm behind my alternator...so where should this be pluged into?

they might be referring to the ducting that runs from the "summer/winter" box to the air cleaner, the box and snorkle is located at the front right of the car, under the hood... above the headlight housing

Is it part of the air pump? I don't even know what one looks like but there should be a tube on your exhaust manifold that wraps around that direction over near the battery...

What year is your car?

A few posts down was Greg offering up some smog stuff, maybe he has your missing part. There was a mystery valve on my 76 that sat just above the alternator, it was shaped like an ice cream cone. Maybe you can pick it out of this smog stuff I bought from Mike Hannigan.

Thanks,

I believe you're looking for the assembly in the top right corner...

It's got a little thermostat in it and you can select to always have cool air from outside flowing or turn control over to that thermostat spring.

from the bottom of the summer/winter box at the radiator bulkhead down and back to a fitting on the exhaust manifold-to-downpipe joint. It's pretty common for that to go missing.

Do you have the rubber bellows hose from the summer/winter box to the air filter housing inlet?

I know its not the summer/winter box their talking about i think its the tube assembly in the center of the above pic. the one with the three tubes going into the cylindrical... pump? what is that and should any of the hoses connected be open ended?

That's one of the problems with getting smogged, my ac compressor is on the car but no belt, I had the hardest time convincing the smog guy that it was not the smog pump.

First off I would find a different smog guy. "Thermostatic Air Cleaner" gets him a stupid card.

If you are talking about the item in the middle of the picture with the three large black hoses and a single vacuum source port, this is the air pump control valve. It is sometimes called the smog pump diverter valve. The hose entering the top of the valve is the intake and is routed to the air cleaner. the hose coming out the side is routed to the intake manifold to a port below the carb close to the master cylinder location. The hose on the bottom goes to the intake of the smog pump, and the vacuum hose port connects to a manifold vacuum source. On 320i's the hose coming out the side dumps to atmosphere and the valve is connected to the output of the smog pump regulating the pressurized air flow from the pump rather than diverting the intake air to the pump. I had a '75 that was using new 320i components hooked up to operate like the original '02 design and it all functioned properly until I tore it all off.

Hope this is helpful.
Dave
