Like 02unaboy said, Ad-aware is a good product to use in addition to your virus software.

Strange browser popups are usually caused by plug-ins. When you see that on people's machines, the plugin is usually listed under the "Currently installed programs" and can be removed. Go to #Control Panel #Add Remove Programs. Look through the list. You will recognize most of the programs there. If there is something that looks questionable, type the name into Google and see what it's for. Sometimes google will lead you to a security site that will list the program as spyware and give instuructions for how to remove it.
The other thing you should do is use Firefox instead in Internet Explorer.

another good one is
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
I think one of the programmers at trend is an 2002er!
That will do a virus and malware scan using the latest defs for free
But it might be worth trying to download firefox and use that to get on the net and run your housecall from that. Some really nasty IE browser hijackers will know what you are trying to do and make it fail.
best of luck!

I wouldn't waste anymore money on anti-spyware to try to fix you current problem. You will never get rid of it 100% anyway. I would do what MikeM suggested. Save as much important files as you can; to a flash drive or burn it on a CD, reformat and reload you drive and start over. Load the newest anitvirus and watch where you surf and what emails you open. Computer viruses are like drugs, it will never be completely eliminated so you just need to avoid it. Using Firefox is another good idea too.
Oh, and always have your important files/pics/etc backed-up too because you may not be as lucky with a crazy virus. _________________ Ray

that's poor advise...ad-aware and spybot, in combination will remove any and all malware...trend-mirco's housecall as mention'd will verify it's been eliminated...it's a big job for some people backing up all their files in prep of re-formatting
the best advise given is to clean the system then ditch internet explorer for firefox...there might be a slight learning curve with the addition of a few key extensions but you'll never pick up another bug using firefox |
I'm not a tech by trade but I work with tech nerds all day long. Sh*t, I never even learn how to format a hard drive since I've always had someone to do it. But what I do know is that you can get a band-aid fix but more often than not, the virus will still be lingering. Not only will you waste you $$ on the anti-counter attack, you may find you computer rebooting itself over & over and not be able to retrieve anything at all. Then , you'll really be SOL. But this is not professional advice, just from my experience so take it with a grain of salt. Plus, don't assume you can't get any bugs or virus with Firefox, you can.
BTW Bill, glad you are up and around. _________________ Ray

Bill,
Two more bits that may help.... When dealing with spyware I usually download and run Ccleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/ to empty out all of the odd ball temp files that spyware reside in. Once I'm done I typically remove it (don't have to but its a habit...) Next I run hijack this http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html, which will help remove registry entries that some spyware use to run. BE CAREFUL with hijack this as you can really mess things up with it!!! If I am still having problems I will use SpyBot Search and Destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html. If the stuff is really stubborn I have found that a program called Ewido is pretty effective at getting some of the deep rooted malware out http://www.ewido.net/en/.
For the Mac there are quite a few different antivirus packages out there. I'm currently using Norton Antivirus for my Mac (free from work) and I really cant say anything good or bad about it.... Using a PC now because I'm too lazy to go upstairs and get my Mac...

| BillWilliams wrote: | I just recently got a virus or spyware on my laptop PC. I have it protected with Norton, ran Norton full scan three times and it will not remove it.
Whatever it is, seems to have attached itself to internet explorer and will not let it launch. Instead, it returns a message that my security is breached and I need to buy this particular software to get rid of it. I also get a balloon pop-up from the system tray that says:
System Alert: Malware threats
Your computer is infected with a back door Trojan that allows the remote attacker to perform various malicious actions. Click this ballon to download malware removal software.
If there is some way you can tell me how to get rid of it, I appreciate it.
The way I know get to the internet is through an application called Advanced Browser |
I'd google the exact phrase that you are getting as a warning message, and go from there.
Good luck,
