Bad day today. www.dakar.com Damn that race is tough. The coverage is usually in the early afternoon on the VS. channel (formerly known as OLN).

Subject: The BTCC/DTM races have been going on for a month . . .

now. The BTCC are entertaining, but the cars suck. The DTM is interesting but no BMWs. The Australian V8 Supercars have been on for a few weeks too, and the repeat is at midnight PST tonight. SPEED had the Nurburgring 24hrs on last week, and for a month or more had the A1 GP series and also a couple of Grand Prix Masters. The Le Mans Historic Races were last week too. It's too bad all the interesting road-racing has to wait and be compressed into the space between the end of the NASCAR year and the New Year. Other than the BTCC and the DTM, not much on SPEED now. The next DTM race is from the Norisring in Nuremberg, which is the old NSDAP (Nazi) Party stadium where the big events happened. Whenever you see the big Nazi eagle blown-up at a concrete stadium, that's the Norisring.

The cars suck?? Yes, they're less exotic than your average formula one car. However, I think the fact that they are a little more affordable gives the drivers more license to toss them around a bit and give a really entertaining show. When was the last time you saw driving that agressive on the F1 level? Yes, I love F1, but you can't help but want to see some more passing other than in the pit lanes. Oh, and it's worth mentioning there is one BMW in the BTCC. However, it gets very little TV time because it's always sitting toward the back of the starting grid!

or that F1 is the best -- just that the cars aren't very interesting to me. F1 cars were best in the ground-effects era. These days I prefer endurance racing cars and historic racing vehicles of various types. Passing or no passing doesn't count, the cars do. Don't forget that we don't get to see the World Touring Car Championship here, and BMW was champ this year (the FIA only has three championships : F1, WRC and WTCC) . . .

I did find something that makes the Dakar rally fit in with this thread. Former BTCC champion Yvan Muller is racing the Dakar this year.

As to some of the other comments: The cars may not be the most interesting, but in my opinion, the racing is MUCH more interesting to watch than F1. I enjoy F1. I like the technology. I'd much rather watch something that is a lot more evenly matched. BTCC and Aussie V8 Supercars do that pretty well.

Subject: Dirt, don't forget that in the BTCC there is reversed grids

with the first eight cars lining-up in reverse order of where they finished, so the eighth place finisher in the first race starts on pole in the second. Also, there are weight penalties (I think these are in the AV8SCs too) where pounds are added and subtracted between races to even out the racing. I don't like artificially contrived equality of results in racing. If you want that I'd rather have one-make racing, and I'd rather see a one-make race of R5 Turbos (that had that series in Europe in the '80s) than of Fiestas. NASCAR has fake racing and shitty cars. The drivers also have a different idea of what good racing is than those of us who watch racing. If a team, make of car or a driver needs artificial influences to win races, than they are not doing their job right. Would you enjoy the Olympics if competitors all had to weigh the same and some had to put even more extra weights on so that all their times are exactly the same? Imagine basketball where most of the players put on elevator shoes and hand extensions (along with extra weight to match the tallest player with the longest arms. Racing has always had equality of opportunity to compete (well, maybe not always), but it's antithecal to the idea of having a race in the first place if you want equality of results with all the cars coming home first at the same time.

I think V8 Supercars are pretty exciting to watch and the season this year has been really good. Although a big fat cheater won the championship by taking out the championship leader (1 point in front).

It has changed its agreement for TV rights in Australia and I will be interested to see how it goes this year for air time. I think it will really suffer as one channel is "The home of Motorsports" with F1, MotoGP, Champcars, WRC, V8's and their supports and most of the other major national championships...

When it came to Australian GP, in years gone by the V8s have been a support catagory and are widely recieved by the F1 drivers and teams as being such an exciting event. The reason why they could race together was that the TV coverage was through the same comapny, since it has changed, the V8s are off the line up for the F1. This is a huge loss for exposure, fan base, etc.

antithecal isn't a word. I think you meant antithetical, which fits what you are trying to say. (insert smilie face thingie here)

P.S. Now I know I can never make a typo or spelling mistake on here....
Shit, I even had to edit this smartass response when I posted and saw that I too made an error!

Subject: the DTM

The DTM is fun to watch kinda.. I mean there are only audis and mercs right?

The thing that makes the Brits rule is how close in performance all those cars are. They are scrapping the whole race pretty much, while DTM the field spreads out and as long as the guys keep the cars on the track its pretty much follow the leader.

I do love f1, but those races are more and more about fuel strategy and pit stops ..if anyone makes a pass its like BREAKING NEWS. the Brits have a real race every time. From a pure watching perspective I give it to them

i think the eagle was on another building... the nurnberg had a huge concrete swastika at the Zeppelintribüne that was covered with a flag, then blown up...

the site where i found those pics said there was a huge WOODEN eagle there before the swastika, but obviously it was temporary... (as was the swastika...))))

but back on topic,,, i like aussie supercars best... crazy fucks!! :D
