Subject: 1972 2000tii Touring Reassembly

I will start a new BLOG with pictures of the reassembly.

I brought the car home on Aug 4th and started tinkering with it on Monday. I have had limited time to devote to it, but I am making progress.

The tear down and first part of the refurbishment is in a seperate blog below.

http://www.bmw2002faq.com/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,50/page,viewtopic/t,274592/

I will try and post weekly updates.

Moving the car from the body shop in Greensboro, NC

Wrapping the harness

Wrestling that dreaded clip on the brake rod

My youngest, Evan, helping me drop the CV joints and springs to install the bump stops

Rolled it out of the midget garage for a photo op

Matthew Cervi, Nathan and Mike "On Star" Pugh, installing the transmission on the motor

We installed the motor, transmission and sub-frame as one unit. No fuss, no muss, no scratches. It took about 1 1/2 hours from putting the motor in place on the ground until the final subframe bolt was secured.

Motor in place, we lowered the car to small jack stand height, then raised the motor to mate with the body/frame rail.

Mike securing the transmission

Thanks to Bill Riblett, the bumpers are on

Had some valuable help from the wife on installing the heater control valve

Matthew Cervi teaching me how to install the windscreen

Mr. Eric, my old German friend who live across the field from me, wanders over from time to time to check on me.

Heater box going in for the second time. I had to reconnect a wire that slipped loose in the box and fix some interference with the fan.

Rear brake lines finalized

Fuel pump hooked up and that miserable 8x13 pulled through the hole that must have been designed for an 8x12 line

Shift platform, speedo cable, and exhaust support installed.

Installed the hood latch bar, wiper motor and spitters.

Dash cluster hooked up. Hope all of it works when I turn on the power...

Waiting on Bill Riblett to help me finish the bumpers

Getting closer, but still a long way to go.

Interior is coming along, still have to bolt down the seats and trim around the shock towers with some seam tape.

Rear close to completion

Hope it fires this week or early next week!

As soon as I tighten the clamp around the filler neck, it is ready for fuel.

That hatch with an original cover and utility box

With more help from Bill Riblett, it fired with little coaxing. Having some trouble getting it to hold an idle below 1,300rpms.

The wife also assisted in attaching the radiator after I had to take it out because I was the village idiot for the day.

Evan is up and around, but still not able to be of much assistance.

Center hood hold down

Hood latch taken from the front end of car

Picture taken from beside the driver's door

First drive on Labor Day 2006

Console installed

Older son helping Pops figure out how to put the felt and chrome on the door panels

Evan hobbled down to help me tidy up some wiring and put on the air cleaner.

Evan taking it for his first drive

Original sales brochure from 1972, a gift from Dr. Marti and the BMW model, a gift from my wife

Driving lights installed

Airbox is in, still have an idle problem

First night drive

Evan's first day without bandages and knee immobilizer

Looking good Bill! Cant wait to see this done! Like the other Colorado cars, this is very inspiring for the level of detail etc. that has gone into the project. Keep up the good work. Not long now!

That is a damn awesome looking project. Best of luck and keep the pics coming!

By the way, in the second photo there seems to be some sort of circular-punched braces in the quarterpanel where us Sedan guys have only a gaping hole. Is that factory on the Touring to compensate for some sort of rigidity loss?

Subject: I believe that is specific to the touring

the C pillar on the touring is a few inches further back than the salons. The rear quarter glass is longer as well, naturally.

I assume it compensates for the rigidity lost in the bulkhead between the rear seat and trunk. The touring has about half of that bulkhead compared to the salon.

Awesome Bill...glad to see your helper assisting you once again!!! Answered prayers huh? :-)

As for the clip, I had the same problem on Hugo...I finally "bagged it" and installed a modern "Circlip" on there...works fine...just an idea if you can't get yours back on.

Colorado looks awesome Bill!!!! Simply gorgeous....I think my knees will get all "wobbly" when I see that Touring in person! :-)

Have a great weekend my friend....our son Justin is coming home from Ohio today so we are going to take a run in Hugo together...he's yet to ride in him.

now that he has to lay flat on his back to recover no better place then under the car. You can bring him his meals and through a pillow down when he goes to bed.

Nathan who was in Iraq, thanks for your concern.

The wife and Nathan are at the hospital, I have been there for three days and nights, I may try to drop the motor in the touring today and tomorrow. Mike Pugh, my friend from NC is headed this way to guide me along the way.

Geez Bill, I hope your son is back to his best in no time. I gave up riding bicyles because I was sick of being hit by people in cars... twice in 3 months was too much for me.

With motorbikes I would end up dead.
