Subject: 1970 turbo build-up - update 08/14/07 - running

I have started the turbo buildup of my 1970.

h&r/bilstein sports
poly bushings
kmac front strut mounts
320is recaro sport seats
320i 5 speed
320is 3.91 LSD
23/19 mm sways
front shock tower stress bar
battery relocated to the trunk
turbo engine

Specs on engine....
8.5:1 comp
292 cam
ported/polished head
rebuilt garrett t3 turbo, .60 compressor / .48 turbine, internal wastegate
equal(almost) length tubular exhaust manifold
intercooler

I will be running megasquirt eith edis ignition, wideband O2 sensor, etc

Today I disconnected everything currently connected to the old engine. All that is left is motor and trans mounts and out it comes.

A couple of pictures...taken with a camara phone, all i have right now and will update as the project progesses.

This is right after the manifold was built...it now is fully welded.

It runs! It drives!

Make sure you "clock" the center section of the turbo to get the oil drain pointing down. Looks great. I would sugest after you get your manefold all set up, get it ceramic coated. It will make it last a lot longer and will help keep the under hood temps down.
You gonna blow through that 32/36? That would be truly old school. EFI would work better.

I think he's going megasquirt. Good luck with the project, I have similar ambitions with my car.

Yes I am using megasquirt. That is the old engine in there right now...about ready to come out and wanted to make sure everything is lining up after the manifold was welded completly....

I have thought about getting it coated..

Using a bracket for your turbo is a very good idea. Manifolds usually fail because of the weight of the turbo. You can also get it pressure cut as well.

Small update...

Engine is out, waiting on a couple last parts for the new engine.
Rebuild the re-end and CVs...all back together now

Been taking some time to fit in the intercooler, 27" x 6" x 3"
as well as the oil cooler.

Here are a few pictures.

I have finally had some time to work on my project some more.

I have the intake done and mounted, fuel system is all set up, everything is wired

I about ready to start it on efi and then once it is started and running I plan to pull the exhuast and bolt on the turbo, build a new exhuast system, and then start on turbo and begin to tune.

Warm weather is on the way here in MI and so is my 02.

more pictures to come soon

Nice. I'm getting there slowly - Except I'm going to run mine on my old block until it blows up then I'll chuck in the new longblock. Let me know how it all goes. You're using the mustang tb right?

Not sure...but anyway

The car is now running on MS. I had a bit of trouble at first and come to find out I didn't have one of the fuses for the second injector bank pulled in all the way.

There is still more tuning to be done but it is back in the garage after two nice days of driving and I will be pulling the exhaust tomorrow to start bolting up the turbo.

First thoughts of MS......

...it is great. The car runs better than it ever did with a carb and it still needs a fair amount of tuning.

More to come soon.

I will also post pictures.

Jakeb I can see 2 things(sending units) tapped into the oil filter housing. I`m pretty sure that one is an oil pressure unit and the other is for? or is my eyesight really gone.

nope your eyes are correct.

That is a s14 filter housing with connections for a oil cooler. It also has tapped spots for oil pressure and oil temp. So I am using both of them.

Pulled the old exhuast off today and start to fit the turbo. The piping to get to the intercooler is going to be tight.

It's alive round two. After waiting on parts for weeks and weeks my turbo 02 is alive, running, and boosting. I am building 7psi by 3000rpm. It starts to spool almost off idle. Still some tuning to do. It is really nice to have the wideband O2 sensor. Makes it a lot easier. I will snap some pictures soon.

Can anyone look at a log for me?
