Thread Topic: When I start my car, my speedo cable catches on fire Threaded

This is a really wierd electrical problem. When I try to start my car, the starter just clicks, and the spedometer cable gets really hot.

It actually started smoking, and melted the housing right off of itself, and some nearby wiring.

What the hell is going on here? some kind of short for sure, but the speedometer cable? Why? this is very troubling.

Let me know if you have any ideas.

thanks

The earth cable between the engine and body/chassis is the problem either missing or badly corroded.

TJW is right. Actually 2002s need 2 ground wires. One from the battery negative to the chassis and a larger one from the battery neg. to the engine block. You may have toasted more than just the speedo cable. Look at the brown and white wire at the top of the engine for the temp. gauge.

I'd unhook the battery and start to do some testing.

Look at the wiring between the alternator and the main harness. Common spot for it to wear away the insulation.

The night my tii was delievered to me, the D+ grounded out on the frame and melted the front part of the wiring harness. Fortunately it was about 1 mile from my garage (after traveling 819 miles to get here to NYC).
