The earth cable between the engine and body/chassis is the problem either missing or badly corroded.

TJW is right. Actually 2002s need 2 ground wires. One from the battery negative to the chassis and a larger one from the battery neg. to the engine block. You may have toasted more than just the speedo cable. Look at the brown and white wire at the top of the engine for the temp. gauge.

I'd unhook the battery and start to do some testing.
Look at the wiring between the alternator and the main harness. Common spot for it to wear away the insulation.
The night my tii was delievered to me, the D+ grounded out on the frame and melted the front part of the wiring harness. Fortunately it was about 1 mile from my garage (after traveling 819 miles to get here to NYC). _________________ -Justin
