Subject: couple new pics 3/16/07

it started a little over a year ago when i asked Carl to try and source me a decent project car ......Dang and Carl really went out of their way to find me a car, check it out and even load it onto a transport and send it to minnesota for me. here it is as i received it, less the wheels. i threw those on to ease moving it around. it doesnt look too bad here and it was a fairly solid car. if i could just be satisfied with a nice driver i could have made a great car out of this. but as you take things apart you start seeing more and more and pretty soon it takes on a life of its own

as it turns out this was a 1 owner car thats never been touched. completley unmolested wiring harness and no mods whatsoever to the car. otto was 90 years old when he died and his wife gave this car to someone who promised to restore it but never did.
i had got ahole of an 80k mile s14 from a guy locally for 2500 complete and had been saving it for when i found an 02. i had to cut the motor out of the car but after i sold the tranny i had a really nice low mileage s14 with only 2k into it. so this will go into my 02 along with a 3.90 lsd and all the normal suspension pieces

ive spent the last year restoring all the small components ,refreshing the wiring harness, beadblasting, painting and powdercoating everything i could. ive also sent 3 lots off for yellow cad so every fastener on the car will be plated. the shell is currently at the body shop receiving all new metal. looking back, i should have sourced a really nice roof panel and brought it to the body shop and asked them to build me a car underneath it because thats the only original metal on the car. its currently receiving a new nose, tail panel, both quarters, both doors, both front fenders, hood and trunk and rockers. as well as outer wheel housings. the more we pulled off the more i wanted to replace until i got to the point where i said screw it, do it all. hopefully this will be a nice car when done. lots of people could say im foolish but i have 1 real hobby and thats cars. i love the build more than driving them. i get great enjoyment in knowing ive touched each and every bolt and everything is done correctly. granted ill have way more money in this car than it will ever be worth but i honestly dont care. its just something i enjoy. heres a bunch of pics in no paticular order showing some of the work done

the car currently sits as you see it in these last pics. still needs the trunk floor and quarters. the body shop has been swamped the last few weeks and my car sits until they slow down. that was part of the deal when they took it on. im anxious to get going as once i get the shell back the car basically only needs to be reassembled. everything is done except the motor which i will tackle this weekend. im going to rip into it and do rod bearings and timing components just because its out and then ill know what i have. ill post pics as it comes together
oh heres my cluster which i tried to zero out the odometer on. i got to 20 miles and called it good enough. i was worried id screw something up and considered myself lucky to get it that close with all the numbers lining up properly

Had a chance to ride in a S14 '02 today. The driver got 3rd gear to squeel right in front of a BMW dealership!

I have a Stg 2 M10 and I am KICKING MYSELF for not going the S14 route.

POWER POWER POWER and then he shifted into SECOND GEAR!!!

It is going to SMOKE when you get it done!

wow. You have the best part coming, reassembling it. It will look better than new for sure. And the best part is, it will always like to be tinkered with and dialed in. I like what you did with the dash and the strut towers. Al

I know henrietta wants her subframes treated like that but those oil soaked bushings are going to have to wait until the next stage. When she gets her re-built engine. I need to be driving the 2002 again soon. Where did you get all those urethane bushings?

Thanks for your kind words on my BLOG and for the group buy on the trim.

stop by this summer and ill give you a ride in my e30. then you decide. this car is really being built to get my wife to accompany me on drives. she refuses to get in my e30 for any reason. i have 1 loud, stiff, hot, uncomfortable car. i want to make the 02 civialized yet fun and comfortable so she will enjoy it as well

Still going to run sports and the stiffer springs? I am curious, because on my stock 69, I want to tighten it up a bit. One option is the Kormann roadsport kit. HD's, urethane, and springs that drop the car 1/2 inch or so. But others have really liked OEM rubber with better shocks and springs. So....

yes im running sports with h&r's
i kind of made my decision from listening to others on this board. i am pretty tolerable of stiff suspensions so i think my set up should be a good compromise. (i hope)
besides i drove carls 02 in sacramento and liked his set up. but it was terrible riding in the back seat.

this is carl with a "c" in sacramento. but he has bilstein sports and h&r's. i believe he has all urethane and it was comfortable yet stiff in the front seats. when i rode in the back it was miserable. i almost got sick on a 2 hour drive but nobody will ever ride in the back of mine anyway.
i figured if i went with all rubber it may take a little of the edge off

What transmission do you have? Did you have to change anything to make the s14 work with the transmission?

Did you have to change any of the other stock 2002 stuff to make the s14 work?

This is a fantastic project. I can only hope some day to do this.

the tranny is an e21 5 speed. the bellhousing sensors from the m3's 265 need to be grafted into the bellhousing of the e21. its a fairly straightforward swap and im one of many who are doing it or have done it. im benifitting from others hard work. if you can pull a motor and have basic mechanical skills this is not a hard swap. most of the technical things such as shortening driveshafts, welding sensors in bellhousing etc im cutting a check for.

i normally stop in every few days but i dont want to be a pain in the ass and there hadnt been much progress lately but kevin, my body guy called me and said to bring the camera. so i stopped by to see what was new. they had both new outer wheel housings mocked up and both new quarters clamped on for fitting. he promised me things would move more quickly from now on. anyone ever heard that?? heres a couple new pics

while i was there i stopped by parts to see if my new exhaust was in. it was so i grabbed it. its a new turbo exhaust but what im excited about is ,,, i wanted a center exhaust and nobody could tell me which to order. theres a center exhaust and a side exhaust,, only 1 version is still available and i gambled it would be the center exit and it was.

Hey BLUNT... I had read your posts on here and realised you knew what you were talking about, just had a look here and DAMN! That car is sensational!

Best of luck with the project. It is a real pleasure to see such a fine example in the midst of being produced. I look forward to the final product!

what's the purpose of the center exhaust? i'm a mechanical retard and trying to learn but it seems to me it would flow better with just one muffler

i recently pick'd up a nice step header and i'm considering having it installed with only a stock muffler...why would i need the center muffler?

Well theres really no purpose other than i think its cooler looking. im sure it may flow better with just one muffler but the turbo resonator tones the exhaust note down a bit. i have 1 really loud car and am looking forward to having this as quiet as possible. word has it the s14 breathes fine with the turbo exhaust 2 1/4" pipes. im going to fill the little cutout on the right side of the tail panel where the exhaust used to exit. i guess i just prefer the look of the center exhaust. i dont care whether its correct or not. theres nothing really correct about my car

thanks todd. im actually learning as i go. i honestly dont know much about 2002's and im new to them a year ago. but basic restoration theories carry over to anything. i really wish i had the body and paint skills some of you guys have. id really like to be able to say i did it all myself. but i am doing everything less the bodywork and paint. im getting excited to get going. ive been stockpiling parts all winter and want to start installing some of them. thanks for the kind words

No way dude that thing will be even more fun than your E30. Are you going to bring one of these cars some day to Spartenburg?

I hear there is an E30 Touring in MN now according to roadfly e30 section.

and saw your complete project. You are my hero and role model. As I read your story, it is ditto here. No body work skills, spending too much money but do not care, roof is the only thing really left on mine too. You know my suspension story.

Keep up the great work and look forward to the assembly stage. My project does not include that hot rod motor though.

About the suspension, my tii that I drive now, had Bilstein HD, HR springs and oem rubber and loved the ride. However, I want HD on my project car so I bought sports and put them on the current car and put the used HD on the project car. The wife did not notice the difference when I switched to the sports. I did not find the ride more harsh, it just had a faster rebound rate when going over bumps or gitty up hills
