Subject: 1975 Golf 02

Well what can i say, ive had the car for almost 6 months and im only now really making progress, which is why i am finally posting a blog.

Well the story behind the car is my sister boyfriend bought the car about 4 years ago. He drove it around for 2 and a bit years untill he was done for driving without rego and then the cops began going around the car with a big DEFECT stamp (so to speak). the car sat in his driveway for another 2 yrs and then he moved interstate. I came into possesion of the car.

Now comes the good and bad parts of the story. 1st good part, I own a 02. 1st bad part, it wasn't working and was FULL of rust. well now i will speed through. i got the car working and started stripping it.

It was then shipped off to Bavaria cars in galdesville and they began to tune the car and we got a quote on the rust... 10K!!! not a real suprise but since this was the case we went on the path of a new shell.

Took just under a month to find one. same colour less then 10mins drive from the workshop and hardly any rust. we got it for 1k and then shipped it off to bavaria cars and it has since been stripped of every thing and is now waiting to go to the body shop.

Now for the pics

The original 02 with lots of rust to go.

ek, know all about that kinda rust! Both sides in mine had suffered due to water running down from where the heatbox is and pooling in the floors.

CHRIST you should have seen the rust in the passenger side of the old car!!!
The only other rust is in the front guards and the firewall passenger side rest of the car is spick and span. Also anyone in sydney looking for body work i suggest Astrum body shop in Gladesville 5k for re-spray and rust repair

Thats the reason I'm hesitant to remove all the sound proofing from my car!

Just one question, are you keeping the engine bay black, or are you changing the colour of the car?

Its looking good, keep up the good work.

well they took both the boot and bonnet back to bear metal all over! now they are doing the finishing touches before its painted. still have to weld up the holes though. well here are some pics that i caught.

well this is going well

rear end of the car was in pretty good condition

still a bit of rubbing back to go

Factory defect! well doesnt matter im cutting a hole for the middle exit exhaust.

bonnet stripped and ready for paint.

so all the body work should be done by mid dec then comes the long and hard part of putting it all back together!

What are you planning on doing for a gas pedal hinge since the old one rusted away? I've been trying to figure out that dilemma myself, and can't come up with a good idea. (It should be noted that I used an old door hinge in the past. This is not a "good" idea.)

Looks good man, keep it up. Matte-black engine bays unite!

well after i took that photo i noticed what had happened and went AHHH so just bent it back down and tested it, works alright but if it breaks off after hard accl i will get some sheet metal bend it up get some bolts round off the heads and weld them into the sheet metal and then weld the metal to the car and hey presto! as for the engine bay its actually gloss enamel. Im gona do it next time the engine comes out with POR-15. But i did rub back a large portion of the bay before i painted. i still have to paint the wheels and the shell should be ready soon.

I said the same thing about this time last year. Hopefully we'll fire it up this weekend. Good luck with it, looks like a good project.

well I know how I said xmas but I was wrong. The paint has taken a week too long so it should be finished about now. Then we have the xmas break and the shops will open back up on the 14th of jan, which means i will be working like crazy to get it done by end of january.

i'll leave you with my latest work. Merry Christmas and Happy New Years too all!

Im not a purist and dont care much for looks, nor period clashes. here they are

Paint is done, now begins the rebuilding process, I've almost finished my engine work and have also started putting panels back on the car. major work left too do: seat brackets, exhaust and a few little interior things, then it should be an easy process of putting it all back.

hey all, my goal to get the car done by end of january was a decent goal it could have being acheived even but i have failed! The car is now very close to being finished most of the hard parts of interior are done and i have started on the stereo. As for the engine it runs now, exaust still needs to be done but the car runs. here are a few lil pics of whats going on.

The rear bumper is not on and most of the lights are working.

fuel tank went in a few days ago, had to suck the petrol through the line. DONT drive right after doing this!

And finally the engine is in, all the engine wiring is done as well :D
