Subject: looking to buy Panasports, got a couple questions

I currently have 14" BBS rims on the car, they were on there when I bought the car. It has the big brake kit on the front (Aardvark Racing Kit). The stock spacing on the 14" Panasports is 22mm is that enough clearance? How do you measure to make sure that is enough offset?
Price is 178.25 / rim is that a good deal?

offset means nothing without width. my 15x6 panasports are 29mm and fit well with 195/50's

I'm pretty sure mine are currently 14x6 BBS rims, how do you tell for sure? Where do you measure?

Do you have 14X6 or 14x6.5 BBS rims? The 14x6.5's have an offset of 30 as I recall (ET 30)...should be stamped on the wheel. Anyway, I believe when the offset number gets too small....that's where you will have trouble with the wheel/tire being pushed outware too far...very large numbers mean the offset will be inward too far. The 29 to 30 offset range seems to work well on most '02s.

The wheels I have on Hugo are 14" x 6" Superlites with a 26mm offset. They fit swell, but the rear gets close to not clearing....29mm would be better. My guess is that 22mm is too small (I know ET18 doesn't clear without lifting the car in the rear)- so that the rears will have fender clearance problems.

Roll those fender lips!.....all cars vary...don't ask me why. But, some setups work on some '02's but not others. Best bet is to try it before you buy it! :-)

Like I said though...stay with the 29mm offset with Panasports, like on the 15" x 6''s, and you'll be fine.

Good Luck,

John

Like John said, "stay with the 29mm offset with Panasports, like on the 15" x 6''s, and you'll be fine".

That's what I have on my car with 195/50/15 Bridgestone S-03's, which in my opinion are amazing tires! I also have tii front struts and brakes. Although, I'm not sure if they differ in size from your brake setup. If your current wheels fit, you shouldn't have a problem with the Panasports.

I rolled up my fender lips years ago but I don't think it's necessary for the 15" x 6" Panasports. I bought mine last spring from Sports & Classics in CT. Tel. 203-665-8731 and paid $195.00 ea. So your price sounds good!

I think it's one of the best looking wheels on a 2002. They're not too difficult to wash either!

Have fun!

If I remember correctly, the original wheels were 5" wide with a 30mm offset.

And looked like this! A couple of my car just after I got her in 1982, and one of her now! I think she's aged well! lol

very sweet looking ride. Thanks for the link and the help, guess I'll pull a front and rear tire and measure offsets tonight. The panasports on your car inspired me to get them for mine. I've been teetering the edge for some time and I just saw a pic of your car and said...yep that looks SWEET!!! As for rolling the fenders, I have turbo flares, but don't know about rolling the fenders is this something that has to be done at a shop or something I can do?

Have a look at this link from last month.

http://www.bmw2002faq.com/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,50/page,viewtopic/topic_view,threads/p,271812/t,265771/

I know that 14" wheels would not fit over my Ireland big brake upgrade. I took the measurements indicated by the diagram in the above link and the mounting surface of the 14" wheel would contact with the caliper.

But the 15's fit perfectly

any engine shots...I know I'm ruining my own thread, but that is a sweet ride. Do you have the XM commander in front of the shifter? What sort of power issues did you run into adding those extra electronics? Did you bump up the altenator size?
So 15x6 is what I need to look for to have proper clearance with the panasports. Will I need to roll the fender? what tires size is recommended for that?

Oddly enough, I do have some engine shots!

No XM Commander though. What I have there is three gauges. Amps, Oil Pressure and Water Temp. Below that is a BMW radio with a cassette deck (that doesn't work). Below that is a an EQ then a couple fuses and the Hazard switch.

Next spring, I'm upgrading the radio to a CD/MP3 player, removing the EQ and using that space to hold CD's.

I have a stock alternator and an electric fan mounted in front of the rad. I've have never had any power issues.

Yes, Panasport 15 x 6 ET29 will give you the proper clearance. If you want good rubber, I recommend 195/50/15 Bridgestone S-03's. I raced Formula Fords for 10 years and instructed for a number of racing schools/car clubs and I really like these tires. Great in the dry, very forgiving and absolutely amazing in the rain!

I love leaving people behind on the on/off ramps!

As for rolling up the fender lips, mine were rolled up when I did the body 10 years ago, but I'm not 100% sure it's necessary. Maybe yes, maybe no. I also have tii struts and brakes up front.

The colour's a little off in the engine pics because it was a really bright sunny day.

Hope that helps!
