Thread Topic: prepping for newer engine Threaded

Subject: prepping for newer engine

I recently purchased a 2.0L from a 76 2002. It has been out of the car for about a year in a garage. The PO kept the top end sprayed with WD40 and turned it with a breaker bar weekly and said everything moves real good. The engine ran fine when removed from the car. So a couple questions. What do I run in the engine on the first startup to get rid of the WD40 residue? I'm going to paint the engine bay and considered semi-gloss black changing from the red engine bay. What are the thought on a different color engine bay from the car which is red? Also can this be shot with rattle cans? Any other advice would be great on the painting and on the engine install would be helpful

first question about wd40 residue. id dump clean dino oil in it prior to firing the motor and once it ran for 10 or 15 minutes id drain it and start with fresh oil. i dont think its a big issue. as far as the engine bay goes its personal preference but id rather have a clean rather ratty looking red engine bay(if thats the color of the car) than a black semi gloss engine bay with a red car. if the motors out i would prep it and spray it body color. if you dont have the proper spray gun for a pro application youd be suprised what you can do with rattle cans sanding between coats etc. id never paint the exterior like that but id try the engine bay if thats all i had

I rust proofed my trunk about a month ago (after fixing a fuel tank with POR-15) I wire wheeled all rust spots the painted with the left over POR -15 Tank sealer. A coat of fast drying 2-pack paint that I brushed on and it looks very good, you would think it was sprayed. A lot better finish than any rattle can paint.
With the WD-40 dont worry about it, it will burn off. When you first go to crank it over disconnect the lead to the coil (so it doesn't start) to get the oil pressure up. Then connect the coil and fire it up. Change the oil too, as sugested, it will be contaminated by the WD-40. Beaner7102

of brush on paint in red, the 2 cans will match each other, maybe close enough to the cars color. Use a paint brush to get to the area where its difficult to do with a can.Wrap tinfoil around brake lines and wiring. Will look much better than black paint.

black is fine if you restoring an old Mustang.

Body color is what looks best on an '02.

sparay gun, get a PreVal kit. With the paint properly thinned, it works very well for applications such as engine compartments...

Looks like red paint it is. I guess I'll go to the store and get a few different rattle cans and do some test spots to see how close it can be matched. I'm pretty good with a rattle can, but maybe for Christmas the air gun and compressor will be delivered since I have been a good boy this year! If I do get an airgun is there a recommended paint to use for the engine bay since it will have the most heat and the most grime? Is there anything I should tear apart on this new engine to check for since it has been sitting for awhile? Also the guy said there was no harmonic balancer on this engine, where do you get those at?

I think those are crap. I got them at cost from my old job and I still think they're crap.
