Subject: Red "L" light came on the morning...

on my way to work. It's the light next to the orange"O" light when you turn the ignition on. (sure most of you guys already knew that). I don't have an owner's manual but is it safe to assume my alternator or something electrical is going out? I drove with my lights on and the 02 started after several stops with no issues. Any ideas before I start testing things out tonight? BTW, it's a 73 02. thanks

Check the alt/WP belp tension.
Check the ground wire from the alt to the car body or engine.
Check to see that the three wire connector is fully plugged in at the alt and the V reg.

Subject: yep, loose belts and connections

crapped out alternator mounting bushings could cause a loose belt, but they usually cause the belt to squeal when you rev the engine...usually.

my "L"ectric idiot light came on when i had a loose connection to the + lead...it was holding on by about 2 threads. re-crimped it and it fixed 'er right up.

good luck!

Subject: One more thing...

The three prong plug on the backside of the alternator--they can corrode, the wires crimped to the terminals can come loose, and the plug itself can work loose from the alternator. It's supposed to be held in place with a wire bail (clip) but this part is often missing. Check that, and the brown ground wire that runs from the alternator body to the engine block. That's the alternator's only ground path due to its rubber mounts.

cheers
mike
