Subject: Churches are the worst neighbors . . .

I was working late tonight and went out to my back garage to take some measurements of my tie-rods at about 2am. I live next door to a reorganized ex-Mormon church. I hear a sound of what I thought was an animal, but it turned out to be a transient camping in an inset in the side of the church. I made him leave as it's not the place to camp (there's a nice homeless shelter about 1/2 mile away) and it's dangerous to have weirdos camping right next to your backyard. About once a month I have to call the cops because of some weirdo there as the church doesn't do a thing about security. The last one was some weirdo crackhead woman with an unleashed pitbull that set my Lab crazy when I took him out for a wiz and he smelled them. The Lab started barking like crazy and the cracker told me to put him away as it was frightening her dog! One time one of the transients was rousted by the cops and they found a gun, not that I'm afraid of him being armed, but I don't normally carry a gun in my backyard for protection. Aside from the weirdos the church church has pipes break on occasion and they only flood our property, making a mess and they never offer to help clean-up the mess they cause. They maintain their property except on our side, where they've never trimmed the oleander bushes in 15 years since they put them in, and I lean over and trim them as our driveway is right against the chain-link fence, and the pile of clippings, compressed by age, is two feet high against the fence (which actually helps when they break pipes) since I don't go on their property. They've never trimmed one tree branch or cut-back their ivy in 30 years. Actually, they weren't so bad until they had a change of their board of directors about five years ago, and then the younger generation got in charge and started doing rock music sermons, which is really an excuse for some of their board members to have their own bands play.

I had a war with them on Easter Sunday two years ago when they started playing their band so loud with all their doors and windows open, that it was 95db (I have a sound-level meter) in my driveway. I asked them to turn it down or close their doors and they ignored me, so I opened the doors of both my BMWs and blasted the stereos with surf music, and eventually when they stopped playing, then they closed their doors. They do construction late at night, the last time pounding nails and talking loudly at 1am. It won't be long before I'll have to call the cops on them, which I've been reluctant to do hoping that one day they'll be decent neighbors, but it's hopeless. Their parking lot is L-shaped with the bottom of the L hidden from the street and you'll get all kinds of freaks parked back there partying all night. We've asked them many times to put a chain across their driveway when they are not there, but they just ignore that too. It was only a couple of months ago when I took the dog out late and I hear breaking glass and the sound of a car stereo in the back, so I call the cops and this time it was an attempted burglary that was aborted.

Now this is a very nice area, but the church doesn't care that they create problems for the neighbors. They just got new gardeners, and these jerks, while I'm laying under my car working, just shot their leaves and shit right through the fence on me. I screamed at them and they never said one word, so each week when they come I have to stand there and watch them, but that's paid off as they are being more careful about what they do with their blower, but they should just sweep with a broom (it wouldn't take them two minutes) by our driveway. I hose our large driveway to keep the dust down, but if I get a blower and start blowing our crap onto their property they'll get buried with their own bushels of leaves that their tree dumps on our property.

The pastor, or whatever title the dude has, when I complained about all the roofing nails in our driveway while they were re-roofing (I noticed 'em when I pulled in before running them over), said I shouldn't park so close to their property. Duh! Since that's where the driveway is, and the nails shouldn't be there in the first place, I said you will be liable for any flat tires or other damage caused by your church.

I think that the board is using the church for their own personal use, as why do they have rock bands practicing late at night playing crapy cover tunes with swearing in them? I had to go over and threaten to call the cops when they did it recently past 10pm when I couldn't hear the TV from five feet because of their noise.

I never disturb them at all, especially their Sunday services, but I'm tempted to get a compressor and a pile of air tools and chop-up my parts car every Sunday morning for sport. When their pipes break, I have to struggle to find their shutoffs or get in contact with any of them, so the last time it happened I shut the main water off and didn't bother to call them. It took them two days to bother turn it back on and discover they had a broken pipe again.

I think the board and all their parishoners are going down, not up, when the Big Sleep greets them.

OK try talking to the church leaders first, especaly with other residents, hey simple things first. Check your city codes and noise ordences in many cases there are DB limits, and you can claim, thanks to your DB meter that they are causing your hearing loss. With the bumms there is little you can do but call the cops each time, maby meet with the cops and express the problem. Its amazing what a bunch of angry people can accomplish. When they relise its easier to satisfy you then to ignore you stuff with happen. We had the problem at my parents house with a darelect car. I started calling every hour, to the point where they sent a supervisor out there that actualy did somthing.

Mapping out the increased calling of the cops and arests will help your case. Speaking as a geographer, people can redaly see the CHANGE in calls with that church operating the way they are. This can also be argued in the decreased property value and quality of life. If you get me the data I can map it for ya.

What more fun with churches is I have one 1 door down from me. They like to stop and tell me I shouldnt mow my lawn or play with my cars on sunday. These are teh same people who bitch if I dont cut my yard......

What I did with a bad neighbor of mine is every time they had a famialy get togeather it was sudenly time to tune the race car. Thats right Mayodan has no noise ordence, due to the churches. What caused these neighbors to deserve this type of behavor, well they were calling the town ordence people on me cause I own to many cars, rather then talking to me about it first...... Needless to say its VERY funny when there son comes over to ask me to stop running the race car. I tell him to get off my property before I get my gun.... Lets face it dont piss off a geographer with a race car.

Sounds like the whole "I believe in god so I'm protected by a veil of self righteousness syndrome" that sadly, all to often goes hand in hand with the religous sort. Getting through to them is going to be tricky, because after all...god forgives them of their sins...and trespasses. Best bet is try hard to get the city to come down on them.

PS good luck!

Subject: do you want to borrow some of my son's death metal CD's?

Play them on sunday, just loud enough so they can hear them, set the CD on replay and leave the house. When they start bitching, show them a copy of this posting, plus whatever else you have documented on them. There are other imaginative ways to make their live miserable, it could be fun... just let your evil side take care of it!

BTW, very entertaining write up, you need to publish.

That sucks. I can totally identify. I'm lucky here, there is a church across the street from me, but it is tiny, in one room of a building held in trust and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, nobody's an asshole, and I get what amounts to a free James Brown concert every Sunday.

I thought, while reading your post, that you were going to mention severe parking problems along the streets near the church. Not something I have to deal with, but I see it a lot in other neighborhoods.

Good luck!

Love thy neihbor works both ways. I wonder how they'd feel if they didn't feel safe at night or had the same problems at home that they cause for you at the church.
