Are the pictures I am trying too large in pixels? Is there a photo editor or something I can use? I even tried copying an avatar from another car message forum website, and that doesn't work either. What's the secret to doing this?

the easiest thing would be just to upload an image frm your computer. That will resize the image and you will not have to worry about it being deleted from other sites.
So save the image you want on your machine and then uplpoad it to the avatar from your profile settings.
