Subject: How does the Search "AND" and "OR" work?

If I want to ensure that 2 keyword are in the results do I type:

word1 AND word2

or type:

word1 word2

Do quotes work to find a character string? "character string"

Thanks,
Mike

You mean this explanation?

"You can use AND to define words which must be in the results, OR to define words which may be in the result and NOT to define words which should not be in the result. Use * as a wildcard for partial matches"

If so, I must be too dense. Because that's what I was asking clarification.

Let's say I wanted to search for: Z3 coupe

How would I input that in the keyword search?
Is it:
z3 AND coupe
"z3 coupe"
z3ANDcoupe

I've tried 'em all and don't get desired results

Another (much simpler) option is the radio button below the line where you put the search words.

By default it is set to return posts matching "any" of the words. Change it to posts matching "all" of the words, and I think you will get your desired result.

z3 AND coupe: will find all posts that contain words z3 and couple.
"z3 coupe" will find posts that contain the phrase z3 couple

I know this is getting old, but it just doesn't work for me.
Any way i type it, any radio button I select, I get ~589 results.
I've used other forum searches that look similar, but I could get then to show pertinent results.

But, thanks for the responses and forum efforts.

Ah... I think I see what your problem is. The term "z3" is being ignored, I think because it's <3 characters, so your results are matching only the word "coupe," which of course will have 589 matches, since that's a common word on this forum :)

There are two problems here that need to be addressed. First, the search needs to work for <3 character words, and second you should get some feedback that a term is being ignored.

Sorry for the headache this has caused you (and probably others as well). Until I can fix it, I'll add a note to the search entry screen explaining this behavior.

Aaaahhhh, that's it!!
I'll try to find another way to search.

Thanks for sticking with my question.
