Subject: Whats the ULTIMATE car???

So I was thinking about what is the ultimate car and I thought I would ask this group because we all seem to have tastes that are somewhat similar.

What got me thinking was after watching a Top Gear episode, I can't remember which one though. But they drive the Carrera GT and the Enzo, and talk about how they are supercars and great and all, but the cars like the F40 and the McLaren F1 are so much better to drive becuase its just so much more of a rude and crude, intimate experience with the car. One where all the feeling isn't taken out, where the driver doesn't have all sorts of electronic aids for traction etc.

I totally agreed with this (though i've never driven those cars of course). I've driven the Mini Cooper S, which is probably faster than my car (a little), but the reason I love my car so much is the experience, the feedback I get, the feeling that i'm one with the road. The quirks, although some really suck (oil leaking etc), like a bumpy ride (Bilstien sports, H&Rs), lowd exhauste (ansa), sound of the DCOE's, are what make the car so enjoyable. I'd take my car over any car i've driven to date.

So I was wondering what YOU as the 02 crowd thought was the ultimate car, and why you thought it. Maybe if it wasn't such a common car, post a picture. There is one rule to this post, you can't say that the 02 is the ultimate car (even if you think so). I myself love them, and think they are great, but i'm talking about pure engineering greatness!

I'll start by saying, DAMN, this is a tough question. I would have to say.... heh, I need to think about this more. Well, i'm drawing a blank, so i'll get back to what I think.

Post away,

Bryan

Well we all KNOW that the 2002 is the ultimate car.

But I would probably have to say the McLaren F1. It has a 627 h.p. BMW built motor. It has room for 3 people and still has luggage space. The car "could" be used every day. It even has a radio (no cd player though).

I believe Tiff Needell did a test with the McLaren on Fifth Gear and said a lof of the same things i just mentioned.

The McLaren just won brownie points, but does fuel economy factor into this?
Whats that saying, The ultimate car is a bicycle?
I think it means the more simple the better!

I vote for this...besides the "wunderbar" 2002...
Fuel efficient, fun and you can bring your girlie friend!

Though I'm sure most here wouldn't agree, I would vote for the Bugatti Veyron. When I look past the pretty flamboyant bodywork, I see the height of engine and drivetrain technology. It's all the fancy tech stuff that I dream about, crammed into one car (eg. W-16 engine, four turbos, variable valve timing, 7 speeds, and four wheel drive). Perhaps similar to a Mclaren F1, it's a no-holds-barred approach to create the best, and that makes it the ultimate car for me.

I just love the McLaren because for being as fast as it is, it doesnt use crap like traction control and ABS (i think). For such a complex machine, its still very simple. And it still uses a BMW M Power engine.

Everybody is entitled to their own opinion. Cant wait to see some of the other responses!

Ultimate car for me? That's an easy one. I'm a sedan guy. At 6'3", 280lb, I like the space, and I also happen to enjoy beating up on "sports cars" in a family car. Who makes the best sedans? BMW of course. What was the epitome of BMW sedans in my eyes? E34 M5. Now, take that one step better, and give me a 3.8L, 6 speed E34 touring, thanks. THAT is the ultimate car, if I could only own one car to do everything.

Al

Damn, Al, this is getting scary. LOL!

If I could own only one car and had the money, I would also get a M5 wagon and would refurbish it front to back to "as new" condition.

My second choice after the E34 M5 wagon would be the E39 M5 sedan.

Tough tough question. I'd have to have the question subdivided into Ultimate Car Catagories: Luxo Cruisers, Sedans, Coupes, GTs, Convertibles, Race Cars, etc.

To answer the question, the first one that always pops into my head as my ultimate car is the Wiesmann GT.

Well someone said the Muira, which is a dang sexy car. So my vote would maybe be for that, but i'm also a huge fan of Lotus, so I'd have to say the Mk. 1 Exige! Or maybe an Elan...

There is only one car that can deserve a title such as the ultimate car. The ultimate automobile of all time has definately got to be the Porsche 959. This car was so far ahead of its time and still looks to be the most beautiful body style ever created. Trust me, I love the 2002, but one of these gets my vote.

Absolutely amazing automobile. And this is blasphemous to say as a die hard BMW enthusiast but... on my budget just gimme a "lowly" 944 Turbo...That's one insanely fun 4 cylinder car. I've had some serious fun thrashing the shit out of a couple of those cars before. (I hope none of my customers are reading this!)

I love and appreciate my '02 - but even if we do not get into the crazy expensive ultra-cars - the ultimate in fun for me would have to be a convertible.

My vote for a cheap, general purpose fun car has to be the Mazda Miata - especially an early one. My 1993 base model has been with me for almost a decade now - and it is still the most fun/$ car I ever owned. Given that these cars are now old enough to be just used cars, but not not old enough to be abused and crappy - nor yet true classics (but they certainly will be - no doubts about that) - this is the right time to buy one. Not mine, however, it is not for sale.

I must also agree with InkaSteve. The 1955 Mercedes Benz 300 SL Gullwing was a car WAAAAAAAAAAY ahead of its time. It was a gorgeous car capable of awesome speeds. They were successful racecars also. It is also my #2 favorite car ever (under the 02). My room is littered with models of them.
