Subject: Newbie - considering 2002 - looking for advice

I have been think about getting into a project 2002. Looking for suggestions of what not to buy, what to look for etc.

Car could be a long term project, that;s Ok. May consider some for of track car, but may not, I have not decide yet.

I recently finish a 911 track car - it was first project and took almost two years. Some body work, singine work (stock) and complete new suspension...

Always like the 2002's , but I am concerned about the extent of rust on some that i have seen. Maybe start with 3 series??

TIA

Earl

rust is the biggest issue with these old cars it seems.

Yes, rust is a problem with 02's . Remember that the newest one was built almost 30 years ago.

Having said that, there are cars in AZ, NV, CA, etc. with very solid bodies. 1976 cars can be had for great prices in CA due to their smog laws.

Like you say, an E30 3 series might also be amn alternative. They are cheap and plentiful and a lot less rust-pronr than the 2002.

Subject: get a prepurchas inspection

all good advice, but for a beginner I would highly recomend having an independent BMW shop check out the car. make sure they know the 02s, the prepurchas inspection can not only save you from a bad 02, but can give you some negociation room. Most shops charge between 50 and 100 bucks for this. I would stay away from ebay, I see more crap cars go for scary money on there and then there owners are disapointed at the shop.

Subject: Carefully inspect for rust...

See my website, I have pictures of the various rotted out parts cars I've bought over the years.

Everything else mechanical is replaceable. In fact something like 90% of the parts are available through the dealer.

As long as you don't need to drive an '02 in the winter, then its a good car to start with. Otherwise get something newer with real rust protection.

Everyone says look for rust. Allow me to say look also for rear body weakness. Check for damage or repaired damage above the the rear wheels and axles. Pre'74s are incredibly weak here, and all years can never be repaired to full strength.
