Subject: Guibo hitting shift linkage

My new guibo (4 speed, 8 bolt) is hitting the shift linkage where it enters the transmission. I pushed the linkage up, and spun the driveshaft, but it still hits the linkage. It appears the little tabs on the guibo are hitting the linkage, but I can't be sure.

When I tighten the bolts, the guibo is being pulled towards the trans and back towards the driveshaft. It seems as though the driveshaft is too short, as if its missing a spacer to bring it closer to the trans. This casues the guibo to be bent and twisted. I don't think there should be any spacers, but it just seems that way. I also noticed when the bolts are tightened, and the guibo is twisted, the trans moves side to side as the driveshaft is spun. This appears to be casued by the twisted guibo. It seems to be hitting on only one tab of the guibo, and when the bolt for that tab is loosened, it doesnt rub as much.

Do the nuts and bolts need to be facing in a certain direction? Should there be a spacer or some small part between the guibo, driveshaft, and trans?

I had this problem with my previous guibo, which was fixed by tightening a loose bolt. This time, I can't figure it out.

Thank You

No spacers, should be no space.
Maybe not the correct guibo?
Some subframe bushing or motor mount or something shot?
There are slots where the diff bolts to the subframe, they may give you enough adjustment.
Something is amiss.
Good luck.

Well...your car was just rear ended...wasnt it? Something could be a little crooked???

It was rear-ended, I didn't think of that. If anything, it should have pushed things foward, right? Everything was bolted up when I got hit, so that should have kept everything in its spot. I had problems like this before, so I don't think it could have been from that. I guess the impact could have moved the engine and trans foward..but the mounts are fine.

The tag on the guibo said 320i 8 bolt....is that the correct one? It looks the same as the other guibos I have.

the three old ones I just measured are all 38mm plus or minus about .2 measured at the metal tubes.
Maybe you got something different?

Yup, 38

I took another look at my situation. I dropped the driveshaft again, and placed the old guibo onto the output shaft. The tabs on the guibo still hit the linkage. I see no way to change the distance between the guibo and linkage because there's no way to alter their positions. Even if I could fix the twisted guibo issue, I would still have the rubbing. The only way to reasonably fix the problem would be to use a different guibo. I don't see why I have this problem. Its just two stock BMW parts that are interfering. There's no adjustment to be done.

Can I get a guibo that is smaller in diameter? I got mine from BavAuto.

Looks like the flange on the driveshaft was bent. After some use of a BFH, split and flat washers, its back on the road. The neighbors are't took happy about me running open headers though.

Thanks for all the help
