Okay, here it goes.... So, I've been reading this forum for 18 months now and purchased my first 2002 a year ago. After picking up the car (long distance purchase), the engine began to knock. It got so loud that I was only able to drive it for a couple miles. Long story short, the P.O. and I worked out a deal and I kept the non-running car.

The car has been sitting in storage while I tried to figure out what to do with the engine. At first, I looked into having a shop rebuild the engine but a stock rebuild seemed too expensive and used running engines were difficult to come by. I then started reading about the S14 and M20 swaps. The S14 intrigued me since Aardvark racing sells a step-by-step manual. Although the M20 swap was considerably cheaper, cutting up the transmission tunnel was not a job that I wanted to tackle.

However, after months of reading I decided on the M20 swap for several reasons (not to mention cost!). A local junk yard had just received a 1990 325i and I was able to source an e21 323i transmission from another member on the board. My next task was to contact Dan Williams for the engine mounts - SOLD (I bought the last set he had available at the time). Now I was fully committed to the conversion, only problem - I have never really worked on a car other than changing the oil, rotating the tires and wiring a stereo...

...until this last weekend. Got the car out of storage and it now sits in our garage. I started the dismantling process over the weekend and actually pulled the engine and transmission from the car last night! I'm sure I'll be posting more questions as I continue with this swap and will honestly try to document the process as I move along. Thanks to my buddy Tom A. who helped in the engine removal process & thanks to everyone who posts on this forum, it is an invaluable resource!

Cheers,
Chris

Harrison -
I've been reading your blog lately - the car looks awesome! Love the "auto trunk lid opener"...

Mike -
I know how it goes with two kids under the age of three, time is hard to come by and yes, kids are fun (well, most kids). Thanks for the reference on the tranny rebuild - I'm sure we'll meet soon!

It took 10 days before I was able to find some time to spend a few hours on the car. I was able to disconnect the M10 from the 320i 5spd. Looks like my 228mm clutch and PP is in pretty good shape and I may use with the M20.

I also started comparing the 320i trans w/ the 323i trans and noticed two significant things:
    1. I cannot find the connection for the reverse lights. (Update - Found, just behind the bell housing on top of the trans.)
    2. The speedo drive gear and housing is missing on the 323i. Looks like the drive gear from the 320i will fit, but the housing is too big. I've looked all over the internet (realoem included) but parts listing for the 323i trans are hard to find. May have to put in an email to Blunt.

Metal shavings when I drained the oil from the M10 - maybe it's gold!

Flex Disc is shot:

Out with the old:

In with the new (thanks to JohnN, he loaned me his side mount and engine stand):

Looks like I scored with this electric pusher fan (12") that was used on the old a/c system - I'll use it in front of the new radiator:

Enjoy your weekend!
Chris

Most swappers use the Dan Williams mounts. You can contact me directly for his email address or post a WTB add in the parts section... You might be able to find someone selling their mounts.

Subject: Re: '71 2002 M20 Conversion (Water Pump Theory)

I spent some time over the weekend working on the M20 while it sits on the stand. Replaced the timing belt, tensioner and water pump (first time ever for all three) - I was psyched! Then I started doing some more reading on the cooling system and it seems to me that if I want to use an expansion tank, I need an earlier style water pump that has the inlet that connects directly to the expansion tank. Looks like I'll be replacing the water pump again. See diagrams below...

In this photo the expansion tank is connected via p/n 13 and a "T" in the hose coming off the thermostat housing. This is how my engine is currently setup.
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=1113&mospid=47309&btnr=11_1167&hg=11&fg=35

In this photo (earlier model 325i) the expansion tank is connected directly to the water pump via a second inlet/oulet. Consequently, there is no "T" coming off the water hose (p/n 18) from the thermostat housing.
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=1113&mospid=47309&btnr=11_1168&hg=11&fg=35

If anyone sees this different, please let me know! Thanks.

Nice project......I've got a 75 torn down to the shell that I'm building up for track. I was originally planning on doing an m20 conversion and that's the main reason I looked for a automatic, and found the non-sunroof auto, that I'm using. I've decided for now to build an M10 though, I've always wanted sidedrafts on an m10 :)

Anyway, good luck with the conversion, I'll be watching closely to see if I want to take that route in the future.

Water Pump Theory Confirmed!

Thanks to Ian for sharing his photos and answering my questions. Indeed, if you want to run an expansion tank on the passenger side of the vehicle you need the older style water pump (P/N 11519071562).

Thanks for the comments, you should also check out Mike's M20 conversion. He's located in the Vancouver as well.

It's been awhile since I've posted... accomplished a few things and still gathering parts.

Here's a pic regarding the different water pumps - really enjoyed replacing it twice:

Along with the water pump, I replaced the timing belt and tensioner:

Had to remove the a/c unit:

Cleaned and painted the engine... not sure what the color of the car is as the previous owner did not know. Was hoping that is was Agave (071) as that appeared to be the darkest green of the '02 colors - was still too light.

Also began cutting out the nose of the car. I'll be using a radiator from a 82 323i for which upper and lower rad hoses should fit without any splicing.

Removed the driveshaft (thanks to my dad for his help with this and the center link - that was a total P.I.T.A):

Mounted the 323i trans to the M20 and dropped it into the engine bay. Thanks to my wife for her help. Still a couple inches away from being mounted, can't quite figure out where to grab the back of the engine block and still be able to remove the chain once it's mounted. Will try again tomorrow...

Thanks Tristan...

Just came in from spending another couple hours in the garage trying to get the engine mounted. I'm seriously only an inch or so away from fully mounted (no pun intended) - my sway bar is now in the way. Looks like I'll have to figure out what to do with it - maybe drop it a bit with some spacers (hopefully that'll work).

Hey Chris.

Great project Chris! I am in the middle of a similar project -- though I am going for s14 power and a m3 CR gearbox. I'd love to come take a look at your car sometime, especially to see your radiator support modifications...I am planning something similar.

I'm in Portland, not far from PIR raceway, actually...

Drop me a note sometime, if you'd like.

Cheers,

Dominic -

You're more than welcome to come by and take a look. As you can tell, I'm having some problems with the right side motor mount that I purchased. The angle is way off and it looks like I'll have to find someone to re-weld it or use Matt's technique described above. Once I get that worked out, then I'll be able to test fit the 323i radiator.

Give me a couple weeks to get the car a bit further along then you can come down for a visit to West Linn. I also just posted in regards to your s14 vs m20 post, let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks,
Chris

Subject: Re: '71 2002 M20 Conversion (Transmission Mount)

Been awhile since I've had a chance to update. Think I finally figured out the motor mount issue. Had to have the passenger side rewelded by a shop, but it's still 1/4" off or so... will have to drill new holes in subframe and make an adapter plate - thanks to canadaMatt for the pics!

In the meantime, I borrowed a buddies welder and tried my hand at that for the first time today. Somewhat sloppy but it should do the job for my transmission mount. (Still have to drill holes in the tunnel to mount permanently).

I also shortened the shifter platform...

And the shift linkage... getting really short! Hope it works...

Also ran the new steel fuel line, but am waiting for my filter and to remove the engine again before finishing it off.
