if the price of a used is any where close to the rebuild cost, i'd rebuild if i could afford it

Given that at least 5 of the 7 'spare' 4- speeds I can lay hands on are
damaged in some way or another, I'd rebuild one to be sure.

There's a lot of junk out there now. These boxes were not designed to
last 40 years...

520 seems high for just parts. if i were confident in my rebuild skills i would do it just for peace of mind, especially if i found a good deal on the parts. i have 6 bad 4 speed transmissions and 1 bad 5 spd in the basement because i dont know how to rebuild them yet. you could buy another good used one and probably end up like me eventually.

yeah 520 is high but this is all new gaskets ( awesome no leaks), all new bearings, and sync rows (thats 5 sync rows, 1,2,3,4, R)
im still up in the air theres a guy with 2 2002s sitting at a farm might just go buy them open them up and re do mine

if all goes well i might start rebuilding them on the side and make a few bucks im sure people on the east coast would love this

25 years ago, I rebuilt a 2002 trani as literally the first repair I ever did on a 2002. It had a cracked end cover from a flange that had flown apart. I replaced the end cover, and while I was in there, replaced the bearings, the seals, and the bad 2nd gear synchro. It was great for two months, then the synchro started to crunch again. Lesson: you have to know what you're doing in terms of measuring and shimming to get one of these right. If you have a source of another known good gearbox, take it instead of trying to rebuild yours yourself.

well, Rob, that was always true of the Porsche synchros...

heh

But seriously, synchro failure isn't because of bad reassembly.
