California, black plate, round tail light, 2 door, four speed with a clean title. VIN 1562154. This car has not driven since 1992. I bought this car last year, got it running to confirm that the transmission was OK and stripped it down in with plans to convert it to a BEV (battery electric vehicle). It is largely rust-free, missing one rear brake drum and the interior and engine are out of the car. Included are 5 new matching wheels and tires and seats from a 325. A new job and lack of time have convinced me to move on.

Hey Rodger,

THat's interesting about the VIN. Based on the looks of the car its a later 68 but who knows if PO's swapped parts around. An early 68 would likely still have the chrome on the dash, no reflectors, and the emblems above the tail lights etc. Maybe its the first calander year 68, built in Jan 68? Look for the 12/67 or 1/68 stampings on the spare wheel (if orig) and the back of the instrument cluster or the block. I believe the 68's that were built in CY 1967 had the early features and then the ones built Jan 68 and later had the new DOT required changes.

I was going to buy this one but I don't have a good place to store it and I knew I'd probably end up parting it out. I'd rather have someone take it who will get it back on the road. I'm glad you picked it up!

Thank you, I think you're on to something about the calender year. Did BMW build sequentially? My previous 1600 (the manila) vin # 1561983 was built on dec 20th 67 but was vin tagged (stamped) as a 1968 and had the original padded 3pc dash not the chrome and no reflectors, my reading leads me to believe reflectors didn't come until sometime during the 68 model run. contrary to popular belief the federal regs were manadated to apply gradually, hence my former '69 1600 florida s/r wihout headrests (contemporaniously noted in the early R&T owners survey) Detroit implimented the regs wholesale. I'll e-mail the archive and see what they say. I wonder what the original color is? Hope to be on the road (not restored) in a couple months.

It has moved on to a new owner, hence the itch for this car.
