Subject: Stub axles...

Hey Guys,
I'm in the process of building my m20 2002. I'm curious as whats the general consensus of upgrading my stub axles? Must do or am I standing on a bomb?
thanks!

either replace the originals with BMW Originalstub & flange,
or find a pair of 'improved' stubs that have been offered here
in the past.
Either way - the splines on the stub axle and splined hub
wear, rust, gall, loose metal and 30 years is expected life.
Any time a hub is apart for bearing replacement - it's foolish
to reuse the stub and hub - unless your not exceeding 55 MPH
and shift like your granny. When retightening the outer axle nut,
you'll start the failure process of the original worn out stub.
Here's where your stub will break and leave your car with a wheel
attached - or worse.

a failure waiting for you.....

I had a catastrophic failure with one of the "superior" billet stub axles that are never supposed to break - I watched the wheel bounce by as I skidded to a halt after turn 2 on Pacific Raceways... That was 3 years ago. Since then, we have been using factory stub axles on the race car and have not had any problems. The key is that we consider them a maintenance item and replace them every winter.

The factory stub axles have improved dramatically but are still a weak point on our cars - especially those with increased horsepower like my "M2" daily driver.

Cheers,

Heh, that's kind of... scary, Jack! You're doin' a buck 25 through
1, and I enter 2 at... ummm... 4500 in 3rd?

I checked mine pretty carefully every winter, and found that
3 seasons was about the limit (welded diff, DOT race tires)

After 2 seasons (so far) the 320 parts are holding up like new...
