Collecting the parts to replace the clutch and had the flywheel resurfaced. Pilot bearing looks OK but looking at archives suggests I'm stupid not to replace it....so I will. Can't wait to try the grease packing method of removal.
Haynes manual says if I have the 8 bolt flywheel (which I do) I need to replace all the flywheel bolts. Is that true?

Definitely do the pilot and bolts IMHO. Getting the pilot bearing out may prove challenging. You can always order a nifty tool from Baum Tools that's designed to extract the little bugger (70 bucks maybe?) - and designed for small BMW sized bearings. I'd lend you mine - except after 7-10 years of use - it's plumb wore out.
Remember that the flywheel bolts are different depending on year (actually and more accurately; flywheel size). The larger 228mm assemblies use a slightly longer bolt than the smaller 214mm 74-on non tii variety. Blue loctite and definitely use a torque wrench - if not for tightness measurement - then at LEAST for consistency. Same with clutch pressure plate bolts - get 'em new, follow factory specs on torque (and I use loctite here, also).
Sometimes only a 90 degree slide hammer/hook works for removing pilot bearings. I like the elegance of the grease technique - but have never had it work for me, personally.

Thanks, Paul. After installing the rollbar on my Miata Friday/Saturday, I tried the grease method and it actually worked for me and was a piece of cake compared to the rollbar install. Bearing is a sealed unit so I don't know what type it is but it has markings on the rubber seal so I'll see if that tells me.
If you relocated your place down to the DC area I wouldn't have to bother the Forum, I could drop by and bother you every other day.
