Subject: Vintage-correct extra brake lights.

Having recently been a victim of a rear-end collision in my '74tii, I have to say, the last time I drove my becoming-ever-more-precious '73tii, I was concerned, OK, paranoid about getting nailed from behind by some incompetent...uh..pick a pronoun...

I knew "back in the day," Hella made these nifty post mounted aux brake light doo-dads that could be mounted in the rear package tray/hat shelf - or fitted to the rear hatch of a first-gen Rabbit/Golf, Ford Fiesta, etc.

Been trying to find a set of those for a while on ebay...NOS preferred.

So today, trolling around the vast wasteland that is -- no, not television -- ebay, I stumble across these gems. And while they are NOT Hella, they are German, and vintage correct.

And mine!

Be careful out there!

when you install 'em....

There may be quite a bit of red light reflected off the inside of the back glass when the lights illuminate - you may want to fabricate a tube of thin black plastic sheet (or use a piece of thin black ABS tubing or a cut-down ABS pipe fitting) that's slipped over the light and cut to the angle of the back window to keep the light from scattering into the car when you step on the brake.

On the first iteration of my LED 3rd brake light (which was not mounted flush against the window) I found there was so much back-scatter from the light reflecting on the glass that I essentially couldn't see anything behind me when the brake lights were on.

I'm sorry Delia, but the car pictured on the box is a Mk1 Ford Fiesta that came out in 1976 - you're 2 years newer than you should be! ;-)

Hella made something similar in the past. It came in a pair of square red lenses and a pair of straight mounting bars. The lights could be adjusted up or down. They were a dime a dozen in the early eighties but I can't find them anymore.

That's really great information, Armond!

If you read my original post, these Hella units were mentioned.

:)

BTW, where is that shallow-bucket grill you promised to swap???

Shhhhh! Can't that be "our little secret," Nick?

Can we also keep quiet about the 1975 Japanese Blaupunkt Combo II AM/FM Stereo cassette player, the E21 five-speed and 3.91 LSD?

I have a reputation to maintain, ya know???

:)

Have you seen BLUNT's homemade fiberglass 3rd light? Very slick. Perhaps he'll post up a picture.

Not interested in a contemporary solution...if I were, I'd tint the windows and mount an E30 M3 CHMSL in the rear window at the roofline...purists be damned!

Well, take that, BLUNT.

All I asked is, "Have you seen it." As in, a "yes or no" question, directed to the "Queen's you," since my post followed several replies. So much for trying to add something to the discussion. From now on, I'll just slither back to my OT corner and post up pictures of cats and strippers. Or maybe, cat strippers.

Ummm...

This is my thread, Otis, it's about a "vintage-correct solution" for purists who are in search of a bit more visibility whilst braking. The factory produced BMW CHMSL (center, high-mounted stop light) may be a late 1980s innovation but Hella and others produced accessory lamps to serve the same purpose as far back as the mid-70s (and possibly earlier).

I wish to cast no ill will toward BLUNT. I've actually met Mr. B on more than one occaision and we had a lively discussion about things 2002-ish. And, yes, I've seen his rear stop light. Like all of his work, it is a finely engineered and well executed improvement/upgrade.

He recently sent a large, gift-wrapped package of 2002 parts to A1 Imports (where I occaisionally hang out) to be fitted to, not one, but two, M20 powered 2002s.

So, before you get your panties in a bunch, consider the topic, the person who began the topic and try to add something of substance related to it.

Ummm ... Your original post was about avoiding being hit again in the rear. You happened, in your last sentence, to mention the words, "vintage correct" (although I'll grant you, the words were in the title, which was lost by the time of my post, until I revived the original title for you). You placed no stipulations whatsoever on who could add what to your precious thread. I added, many posts down the chain, my observation about BLUNT's third light -- which I'll say again, is pretty damn cool. (By the way, those big-assed "vintage correct" bug eyes look like shit, IMHO. By contrast, that is nice work, BLUNT - very tasteful, classy, and most importantly, you fabricated them yourself, rather than playing "eBay checkbook mechanic." Bravo.)

Ergo, I fail to see how adding an observation about BLUNT's solution (which you yourself admit is "finely engineered"), fails to add anything of "substance related" to your thread. BLUNT's solution was safety-motivated - I know that because he mentioned that concern to me when he consulted with me offline on the fiberglass work. And I think observations or opinions about safety related solutions, "vintage" or otherwise, certainly would have added something of substance to a robust, well-rounded discussion. You might believe otherwise. But of course, such a belief would be evidence of a wrongheaded mind.

In fairness, however, I think I might understand your issue -- Perchance, while wishing to avoid future hits in your rear, you have managed to get a stick stuck up there, nonethess. So, since you didn't comprehend or understand my "yes or no" inquiry in my post (which actually was more of a simple observation/opinion), let me leave you with one final, simple, direct question - for which you may have the final word. After all, since it's your thread (said Aunt Flo while stomping her foot), it would only be appropriate for you to have the final word. That question, which I raise with due consideration to "the person who began the topic," appears below. Go to it, Auntie - the stage is yours.
