Subject: My floor jack is leaking

My favorite 25 year old floor jack for working on my 02 sprung a leak at the piston. I guess this is no different than repairing a leaking piston in a caliper. So I'm asking you hydraulic experts where to find the rebuild kit for a floor jack? Or do you take the piston to a car parts store and just try to find a caliper repair kit that's close. It's not that I'm cheap, but seems a repair is cost and environmentally effective than throwing away a 40 lb hunk of steel. Any help would be appreciated. TIA!

there are places that will repair shop equip, possibly they may sell parts as well. I have used a place in santa rosa ( the name escapes me ) It is typically not cost effective to have older stuff like that fixed.

You need a store/shop specializing in hydraulic parts supply. They will find you a suitable seal. It's good to have a place like that around to find fittings, clutch hoses, seals, custom stuff, etc.

It doesn't seem reasonable or conscious to throw away equipment like that because of a $5 part. It's typical for the North American public, but that's about to change soon.

Subject: Often older jacks have leather cup seals. Those can be

either bought--try a plumbing supply shop--or made from a scrap piece of leather. It's worth taking your old jack apart to check and see if it has O rings or leather cups. I'm with you; I hate to throw away something that might easily be fixed and provide many more years of service.

cheers
mike

old Hein-Warner floor jack for a year with no success - it works fine, but won't hold pressure any more, and I don't want to throw it away, either.....
