Subject: Ireland Engineering Stainless Steel Exhaust Sound?

Hi,
I am wondering if someone with IE's stainless steel exhaust would be gracious enough to post a clip of what it sounds like. I'm sure I am not the only one who is wondering!

not smart enough to do that. have them on my '73 and'74 tii. well made, easy to install although hangers take some finessing. the sound is significantly throatier than stock, but not offensive. like it a lot,but if looking for riceburner loud, this ain't it.

Thanks for the comments. I'm actually coming from an Ansa exhaust right now which is just too loud for myself and my passengers. I commute in my 02 so I'm looking for something that still breathes well but won't make me deaf.

no sound clips... but from my experience sound clips aren't very accurate since to record such a thing depends on many factors.

that being said... I really like mine... had mine installed and when I went to pick it up I as a little shocked at how quiet they were (i previously had the stock muffler with patched rust holes). To me they are perfect... not much louder than stock only deeper tone and when you put your foot into it it makes a wonderful sound... but is not too loud for me and doesn't have any bad resonate spots anywhere in the RPM band.

Give me a couple of weeks when I get the car back from the shop. It might be a bit louder since I have other things, but it will give you an idea.

It's a good sound. Assertive, but not obnoxious, and not "ricey" to quote Jeff Ireland. I'm sure there's someone in the bay area that has one that you can check out live. I wouldn't rely on a sound clip if you're really that concerned about the sound.

I had an IE SS exhaust installed on my 89 E30 (now my daughters car) and it is music to the ears, who needs a stereo. I'm sure the IE SS exhaust for an 02 sounds just as good as the E30 version. Go for it, you won't regret it.

Thanks for all the feedback. It sounds like its probably the best choice for me. I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't too loud or that it droned like the Ansa.

Well I finally got the exhaust and had time to bolt it up last night. The sound is really quite good with no noticeable performance change from the Ansa. Its MUCH quieter, especially below 3,500RPM, but over that, and it starts to get a bit loud. If you have a 5 speed, freeway cruising should be quite comfortable with the IE exhaust, but with the 4 speed, you're still going to hear it.

I currently am running a urethane tranny mount, but I'm going to swap that out for a big rubber one with the hope that that will drop the noise levels anymore.

The tone of the exhaust is excellent, as many have said. It has a nice growl without being embarrassing. It sounds like a much more modern car. The build quality is, of course, fantastic. My nephews were fascinated by the stainless steel and sat there touching it for about 30 minutes while I was installing the pieces.

I did have to dremel out one hole on the flange a little bit, but that was pretty minor.
