Thread Topic: Idle issues Threaded

Subject: Idle issues

I have a 1976 2002 with the 32/36 weber carb retrofitted to it. The idle will not stay constant. I have already set the timing and replaced the entire ignition system and replaced the points with a pertronix kit. The idle varies well after it is warmed up, and can vary by as much as 600 rpm. It runs well other than that, but then again, I've never driven it any other way, so maybe it doesn't. I've only had it about 3 months. Could the carb shafts be worn out? Also, is there a better/easier way to set the timing than using the peep hole at the back of the engine? Furthermore, does anyone make a bolt on (or semi-bolt on) fuel injection kit - one where I don't have to do too much scrounging? Thanks...

Including worn throttle shafts, when you have the top of the carb off check to see how snug the venturies are in their seats.

I recently overhauled my 32/36DGAV and found replacing improved the idle quality even after replacing the throttle shaft bushings. See the thread below.

Even after overhaul check for other sources of vacuum leaks.

In addition to what has been discussed, make sure the valves are set properly (.008 cold), and that there are no 'leaks' in the high tension wires in the ignition system. You can listen for a 'snapping' sound on the passenger side of the engine. If you hear it, you have a short somewhere. Clean or replace the dist. cap and make sure the plug insulators are clean in solidly on. Then look at the fuel system. Make sure that the idle 'jet' is not blocked by the gasket at the bottom of the carb. Then check for vacuum leaks. Good Luck.
