Subject: let the fun begin.....

some of you might remember my 69...i bought it a couple of years ago form a young guy in dallas...it was an e-bay car...it seem'd like a solid car with no rust...came with a new set of wheels and tires which i hate on the 2002 but.....

i've spent the past couple of years tinkering with it, stripping some here and there...i sold the seats and carpet to a board member and bought a few parts the car was missing from the late, great duke rimmer...RIP

stripping the car revealed a fair amount of bondo in the drivers rear quarter...the drivers front corner hood...i started removing it and found more than i imagined...it appears the body guy had an affection for body filler and was unaware that the major dent could be hammered out from inside to reduce the amount of filler needed to perform the task...(but no rust...WOOOOT) anyway....after eating tons of sanding dust and breathing chemical stripper i discovered a good way to remove large patches of bondo very quickly

you body shop afficionados probably know about this but my learning came out from frustration...one day, sizing up all that filler than had to be sanded out, i spotted a handheld propane torch within reach and smiled.....amazingly, a little heat and a stiff putty knife and the suff came off in thick sheets...in a matter of minutes, I'd scraped out All of the heavy patches....

i've decided what it'll look like when finished but you'll have to stay tuned to see what develops....

anyway....the car as i got it and now....let the fun begin

originally white....my plans? not sure yet....

the 3 cars pictured below give me a tingle each time i see them...i'm torn between which way to go...maybe black but the white is really nice with those stripes...but then the green one is so beautiful and unique...

what do you think...?

The white one is nice, but, I wouldnt want it for my daily driver, too racey. If it was a track car then yes, absolutely.

The black one is georgous and the car looks fantastic soI would say go for that but,

I really like the green one as well, and because it's less common that black , I say go with the green! It will look great when its done, and a unique colour.

if it is all stock looking the green one looks the nicest. 02's don't look good just black in my opinion for some reason.

you could paint the car any colour if it is a nice enough restoration and paint job and it will still look nice. It doesn't mean that the colour suits the car very well, in MY opinion.

i haven't had time to do very much as i've generally only able to work on the weekends lately...real life work...know what i mean...?

anyway took these pics last week...stripping the nose, i discovered some very shoddy work in the signal light area of the drivers fender...i pulled a spare fender from one of my parts cars making it an easy fix..

got the doors and trunk ready to prime..then on the the rear quarters which are in good shape, only needing a few door dings flattened....

i have a shop but it gets so hot in the summer...(no a/c) this one's being done outside in the fresh air....i bought 8 cheap gazebo type things that work really well with keeping rain and bird crap off the metal

country life has no boundaries...check out the shingle (over gravel) flooring steve made me...

for killing germs on the car before i prime her.....

kiddin.....i use it on wasps and other pesky creatures....

it works better than most readily available bug spray on the market and freshens the air at the same time

i initially strip'd the majority of the old paint with chemical stripper...(off the shelf at home depot)...then 60 grit on my sander to clean up whats left and surface rust...in tight places i use a s small wire wheel on a drill

wow i am impressed. nice work esty. you have to have some pretty damed good bodywork to pull off black and make it look good. but you probably have the skill to do it. if it were me id go with that green as its a great unique color. if the bodywork were like glass id do the black and then set up movie ropes around it everywhere i went

yep...that's my big hesitation about doing this one in black...black will accentuate every flaw...fortunately, the filler work is gonna be minimal on the large, flat panels...

for some reason..whoever worked on this car in the past had an obsession with bondo...there was bondo all over the car that didn't need to be there as there was no body damage underneath just heavy sanding marks...

the filler seen on the doors and trunk is only a skim coat to fill some deep scratches formerly made by heavy sandpaper or a grinder....it's easier to skim them than to grind away more metal

the only spot that needs or needed substantial work was the nose at the front fender area and there's one spot on the drivers quarter that will require a small amount of filler to fill the dimples i made hammering out a small dent

i'm still undecided on color...i have both black and green and might spray the door and the hood in green and the door and trunk, which i used filler on then look at them a while before shooting the entire car....i'm in love with oz_tom 's black beauty

if the black pieces past muster, i'm inclined to go black and use the green on my 72

armond....what about a green/black 2-tone.....like a 54 buick paint scheme

although i feel you can't own 2 many 2-toners...diversity is a spice of life....and i agree..the green is extremely classic....pretty too

i'm fortunate to have another o2 that will be done in whatever is not used on the 69...so regardless of black or green...in the end, if i live long enough, i'll have both

more on the subject of straight panels...this will be the 1st time i've tried any of the polyester primers...think of them as sprayable body filler....they are very thick and for best results you need a gun with a 2mm nozzle...i picked up a throw away bottom feeder at harbor freight just for the polyester

here's the doors and trunk lid....now i can more easily see any dimples, heavy scratches and other imperfections that need repair....

my 1st impression is regret...the stuff is almost too thick to spray and lacquer thinner won't clean the gun..acetone is required....

how about a rat-rod....? after priming with epoxy then blocking 2 coats of 2k filler primer, i sealed it with another coat of epoxy to keep the moisture out just about to get the front bumper re-do finished on my 76....i need to block the nose once more and re-paint and she'll bee good to go....as soon as i get my ignition key problem sorted out that is _________________

Hows the colour decision going? I 100% agree black is hard to get right. Mines not perfect but damn i think it still looks great (first ever car prep, etc job for me so i think you can make it look great with your skills) _________________ 72tii - Whitey 74 - Blacky

tom...i've had each of the cars & colors on my desktop for a while and it's still a hard call to make...i think what i'm gonna do is one shoot black and one green, hang them back on the car and look at them a while

if all goes as plan'd, i'll have the final coat of sealer on this weekend and the blocking begins...i finally have all the bumps & dings taken care of
