Subject: Anyone got a spare head ? ;-)

Well, my 73 head is cracked....and my trusted mechanic seems to think it'll be much cheaper to find another than to fix that one. he also mumbled something about a 320 head if I wanted to, requiring some mods to fit.... Anyway, my car is stuck at the shop indefinitely... Would anyone on the board have a decent (non cracked) head for sale for a 73 regular 2002 ?

Also, what do you think of the 320 head option? If I can get a little more oomph out of this fiasco for not much more money, I wouldnt mind... I'd appreciate any help, this car has been nothing but expenses so far (my first foray in to watercooling has been less than succesful) !

Greg.

Where are you located and which head do you need? I have one from a 74 but I'm in NC and shipping might kill you. It will need to be rebuilt.

Tampa, FL...

And the car is a bog standard 73 2002, no Tii...

I saw that one on ebay but I had no idea if it fit my car or not per the description...

a tii head will fit but you'll have to use an electric fule pump...which isn't a big deal

I have two extra

one is a 121 head-- ready to go used good condition

the other is an e12 Needs to be decked as the last engine it was on had a badly blown head gasket and it got torched between #3 and #4 cylinders

I'll take 100 for the 121 and 50 for the e12... plus shipping of course (from 94954).

Cheers!
Bill

Subject: head options...

1. Take your existing head to a machine shop and get a price on repairing the crack and doing the usual--valve grind, replace valve guides and stem seals with the later style. A good machine shop may have a better idea of whether your head can be salvaged than your mechanic unless he's really experienced with BMW engines. And dthere are bound to be some good machine shops in Tampa.

2. A 320 (E21) head will work on your car with two caveats: no provision for a mechanical fuel pump and (IIRC) the dizzy turns backwards from an '02, so you'll have to swap camshafts. Or maybe that's an E30 M10 engine...

3. If you replace the head, you'll need an E12 head for a '73. The 121 head isn't compatible with your pistons, and has smaller valves besides. I think an E21 head will work, but might do some strange things with your compression ratio--those on the board more expert than I can answer that.

A bad head (at least one on your car) isn't that big a deal--lotsa spare (M10) heads out there..and for shipping purposes, a complete head (with valve train and cam) weighs about 27 lbs.

cheers
mike
