Yea, I think when I go this route. engine and tranny are coming out, and going in as one piece. I think there is far less headache.

Recent updates...

POR15 applied to the spare tire well and rear shock towers as a preventative measure, Chassis Coat to follow for a nice clean look
Also have my new Oydessy PC925 battery for the trunk, just looking at mounting options
Prepping the underbody for a bit of POR15 and then Wurth High Build underbody spray

In 2 weeks, weather permitting, the POR15 will be worn off my hands and I'll be installing the driveshaft and exhaust.

Pics to follow

I'm looking fwd to driving it with you guys.
I got a set of Mahle BBS 13x6 which should clear without rolling the fenders. Kind of like what Dwight has on his Tii.

Well the Mahle wheels were short lived...they wouldn't clear my E12 5 series calipers and vented rotors. I've decided to go to an E30 15" Alpina or 15" BBS RS or RZ or ??..I want a light, strong wheel that looks good on an 02...I like the Alpina Classics on CJ's car as an example.

Right now I am still buried in undercoating / POR 15 work. I feel like I'm working out of order, like all this should have been done when the car was apart, but hindsight is 20:20. I spent a few hours removing the rear brake lines that run from the splitter to the flex lines in the subframe...apparently it's hard to get these off with the subframe on the car. I feel like I'm slowly going down the road of trying to make the bottom of the car as nice as some of the examples on this board. With this in mind, I'm thinking about dropping the rear subframe to repaint it. The PO did refurbish it with all new urethane and he painted it, but his paint is peeling off on touch as he obviously didn't prep the surface well (no surprise considering other evidence of his attention to detail). So I've dropped any immediate plans to get the car running right away. I'm really enjoying the -10 C / 20F weather on the floor of my garage.

Coming up
Rear subframe?
Wheel wells, POR + chassis coat
Floor - Wurth undercoating

Too bad about the wheels not fitting. Can you post a picture of them if you still have them? Do you want to sell them? I have stock brakes so no fit problem.
Good thing about having a black car is everything above and below will match when you are done.
Yes, I am keeping an eye on your restoration :)

Wheels don't fit, paint flaking off the subframe, POR-15 everywhere... This is starting to sound like my build!

I wore a charcoal respirator when working with the POR-15 and the Herculiner afterwards. The Herculiner was particularly bad, and I know I would have passed out had it not been for wearing a mask. Your work looks like its coming along well though, good job!

Any plans on taking the tank out? I know a lot of rust was hiding around the cork gasket on mine. You should probably pop yours out to take a look, since you're going through all this trouble.

Thanks for the kind words, you know your pictures are the reason I'm under my car this winter!

I've been wearing a respirator as well. I did have the tank out and had it repaired (as it had a few pinholes). Is that cork gasket NLA?

Hope it's NLA. ;-)

Use some closed cell foam or equivalent (and not something that'll hold moisture!).

Cheers,

Ray

Lots of work has happened in the last few weeks...

Gloss coat in trunk
Rear subframe out and broken down for stripping & painting
Tii fuel pump out

The subframe is in good shape, but the paint job from the PO was terrible; it was falling off into my hands when I took the subframe down. On the positive side, all the hardware is in good shape. I'm taking the opportunity to upgrade the rear brakes from 320i drums to a set of disc brakes from Aardvarc (along with a set of BBS RM's)

Tonight I am proud to say marked the last time I had to REMOVE something from the car (fuel pump). As of now, I am officially on the way to putting it back together!!

Next up
Clean moil off the underbody
POR15 rest of underbody
Wurth high build underbody spray
repaint / reassemble subframe with disc brakes

Pics to follow/

I've also cleaned the moil off the underbody...the dirtiest job so far - I came out looking like a coal miner afterwards. Definatley a job for a respirator (which I wore) as I ground the moil off with a soft wire brush. One coat of POR15 is on, one more tonight and then undercoating. The nice thing is the weather is cooperating so I can feel my fingers.

Also got in shiite for spilling POR15 all over the floor of the garage - told my wife I will be finishing the floor in the spring.

Well my update is that there is a lot of snow up here, it's been cold, and I've been sick with the flu...but I did receive some nice packages in the mail:

- All new subframe hardware from Blunt
-15" BBS RM 1/2" front lip. 1" rear from Dave Varco
-rear disc brake kit from Dave Varco

If anyone has been wondering about the quality of the stuff from Dave, it's amazing, and he's very helpful.

As it stands, the subframe is painted with POR and Chassis Coat, one trailing arm is stripped, the other hopefully this weekend. Plus my final coat of POR on the underbody should go on as well.

Pics to follow this weekend.

I take back what I said about being finished disassembling...my stub axles are bad, the splines are rounded. So, more parts on order and I've been reading up on "motivating" the stub axles out of the trailing arms for replacement.

The more you dig, the more you find, the more you dig...

Here's some recent stuff

Trailing arms prepped for POR15

First coat

New wheels, BBS RM 15x7 1/2" front lip, 1" rear lip polished from Dave Varco

Aardvarc Big brake kit calipers etc

Once I get a few more coats on the subframe, I can put it back together and mount the big brake kit etc.

Finally had some time and decent weather to get my rear subframe back together. Did two layers of POR15 and two layers of POR Blackcoat. Bushings are IE, Suspension Techniques swaybar, and lots of shiny new OEM hardware incuding spindles. In the process of putting on an Aardvarc big disk brake kit, you can see the adapter brackets and the cadmium plated hubs. The brake lines were bent to face straight back to mate with the Aardvarc calipers which bolt towards the bottom.

Working on the Tii pump and fuel lines, then the subframe will go back in.

Here are some pics of my work on the fuel pump, cannister and underbody. Will be keeping the pump and cannister as a spare and buying new, to make sure my new motor is fed properly. Next up is to install the new fuel pum[p & cannister, along with plumbing the 12x18 fuel line from the tank to the pump (which is not supposed to be any fun at all...)

got rid of the old paint

Rattle can works well sometimes

Wurth undercoating on top of POR15 on the underbody

Lots of Wurth in the wells with POR15 underneath

Kris-

Did you ever find an antenna. If not, I have a decent used one that you may be able to clean up.

It has the big rectangular base.

Do you have any other shots of that aardvarc rear disk kit? I'm trying to figure out if thats a mod I want to do later on.

Do you have to install a bias valve at all?

Just let me know what you want and I'll take the pics. According to Dave Varco, the bias valve is not necessary. I'm running big brakes up front as well. I was impressed with the quality of the kit and instructions.

Engine bay almost complete! Need to replace the hood insulation and a few other small jobs.

Finished the wiring thanks the Steve and Keith who were my email saviors with advice for an admitted wiring noob. Made sure I had good grounds for the trunk, block and alternator and it started!

Needs some fine tuning, but nothing caught on fire!!
