Yea, I think when I go this route. engine and tranny are coming out, and going in as one piece. I think there is far less headache. _________________ -=Scott=-

What wheels have you decided to go with?
I saw you have your Alpinas for sale. |
I'm looking fwd to driving it with you guys.
I got a set of Mahle BBS 13x6 which should clear without rolling the fenders. Kind of like what Dwight has on his Tii. _________________ 73 Schwarz Tii (resto)

Well the Mahle wheels were short lived...they wouldn't clear my E12 5 series calipers and vented rotors. I've decided to go to an E30 15" Alpina or 15" BBS RS or RZ or ??..I want a light, strong wheel that looks good on an 02...I like the Alpina Classics on CJ's car as an example.
Right now I am still buried in undercoating / POR 15 work. I feel like I'm working out of order, like all this should have been done when the car was apart, but hindsight is 20:20. I spent a few hours removing the rear brake lines that run from the splitter to the flex lines in the subframe...apparently it's hard to get these off with the subframe on the car. I feel like I'm slowly going down the road of trying to make the bottom of the car as nice as some of the examples on this board. With this in mind, I'm thinking about dropping the rear subframe to repaint it. The PO did refurbish it with all new urethane and he painted it, but his paint is peeling off on touch as he obviously didn't prep the surface well (no surprise considering other evidence of his attention to detail). So I've dropped any immediate plans to get the car running right away. I'm really enjoying the -10 C / 20F weather on the floor of my garage.
Coming up
Rear subframe?
Wheel wells, POR + chassis coat
Floor - Wurth undercoating _________________ 73 Schwarz Tii (resto)

Wheels don't fit, paint flaking off the subframe, POR-15 everywhere... This is starting to sound like my build!
I wore a charcoal respirator when working with the POR-15 and the Herculiner afterwards. The Herculiner was particularly bad, and I know I would have passed out had it not been for wearing a mask. Your work looks like its coming along well though, good job!
Any plans on taking the tank out? I know a lot of rust was hiding around the cork gasket on mine. You should probably pop yours out to take a look, since you're going through all this trouble. _________________

Thanks for the kind words, you know your pictures are the reason I'm under my car this winter!
I've been wearing a respirator as well. I did have the tank out and had it repaired (as it had a few pinholes). Is that cork gasket NLA? _________________ 73 Schwarz Tii (resto)

I've also cleaned the moil off the underbody...the dirtiest job so far - I came out looking like a coal miner afterwards. Definatley a job for a respirator (which I wore) as I ground the moil off with a soft wire brush. One coat of POR15 is on, one more tonight and then undercoating. The nice thing is the weather is cooperating so I can feel my fingers.
Also got in shiite for spilling POR15 all over the floor of the garage - told my wife I will be finishing the floor in the spring. _________________ 73 Schwarz Tii (resto)

Here's some recent stuff
Trailing arms prepped for POR15
First coat
New wheels, BBS RM 15x7 1/2" front lip, 1" rear lip polished from Dave Varco
Aardvarc Big brake kit calipers etc
Once I get a few more coats on the subframe, I can put it back together and mount the big brake kit etc. _________________ 73 Schwarz Tii (resto)

Here are some pics of my work on the fuel pump, cannister and underbody. Will be keeping the pump and cannister as a spare and buying new, to make sure my new motor is fed properly. Next up is to install the new fuel pum[p & cannister, along with plumbing the 12x18 fuel line from the tank to the pump (which is not supposed to be any fun at all...)
got rid of the old paint
Rattle can works well sometimes
Wurth undercoating on top of POR15 on the underbody
Lots of Wurth in the wells with POR15 underneath

Kris-
Did you ever find an antenna. If not, I have a decent used one that you may be able to clean up.
It has the big rectangular base.

Do you have to install a bias valve at all? |
Just let me know what you want and I'll take the pics. According to Dave Varco, the bias valve is not necessary. I'm running big brakes up front as well. I was impressed with the quality of the kit and instructions. _________________ 73 Schwarz Tii (resto)

Front brake resto underway (Ireland Tii front big brake kit being installed)
BBS RM, now with disc brakes
Up next
finish brakes. bleed system
POR 15 in front wheel wells

a bunch of other stuff and start the car! _________________ 73 Schwarz Tii (resto)

Engine bay almost complete! Need to replace the hood insulation and a few other small jobs.
Finished the wiring thanks the Steve and Keith who were my email saviors with advice for an admitted wiring noob. Made sure I had good grounds for the trunk, block and alternator and it started!
Needs some fine tuning, but nothing caught on fire!!
