Subject: crane xr700 and black coil with balast??

i finally got some time to put this in, put it all in, and got it to top dead center. there was a noise supressor that was plugged into one of the positive terminals (it looks like it has to do w/the tach since the tach didn't work at all). i had to unplug it to give this a try. when the parts store opens tomorrow i'm going to get a 2-1 connector for the coil so that both can be plugged into coil.

what happens is the car barley wants to start will run for a few seconds then dies. i have a black coil and after searching though the forum, i could only find good stuff on either the blue or red coils.

also i can plug the positive into the positive of the ballast, but i don't think that's what i should do.

do i need a hotter coil?

any/all help is GREATLY appreciated.

Assuming your coil is stock and the feed wire (probably .9 ohms or an external .9 ohm or 1.8 ohm or 3.0 ohm resistor) is stock, check to see your resistance at the coil. Make sure across the coil terminals you are seeing ~3.0ohms.

The car should start/run perfectly with that setup, check the plastic shutter wheel and timing.

I've got the same setup in my car (XR700, black coil w/external ceramic ballast), and it runs just fine. It sounds like a timing issue to my limited understanding; as suggested, double-check the timing wheel/optical sensor installation and that you're at TDC for cyl #1 on the compression stroke. I think I've made the mistake of having it half a cycle off before...

Awesome. Thanks Dave for your response. While checking the archives I did see a post from you about your setup, but nothing about any problems or if you did switch from the black coil.

thanks,
Dave
