I mounted the first of 6 fire extinguishers (this one on the ceiling) in my garage today.

Highly recommended...from Griot's Garage.

Hope this allows me to sleep some better when we move back into the house.

House Fires are no fun...still not moved back in. But, we are getting there slowly.

Happy '02ing,

John

because we built in a rural area where there is no rated fire department...only a far away volunteer dept, we installed a sprinkler system in our entire house...

our insurance company did not want to insure us because we took that precaution and our rates are considerably higher because we did...go figure...

seems they'd rather pay for a complete loss from a fire than have to wade thru a wet soggy mess...(knock on wood)

our family is our dogs and cats...at least, god forbid, if there was a fire when we were away, the sprinklers will give them a good chance

John:

I was wondering about those extinguishers offered by Griots. Pretty easy to install?

Beautiful garage. I'm jealous of your lift (and the paint and pictures) on the walls. Oh yeah - your car looks good too.

Thanks for the compliments...the extinguisher for the ceiling is pretty heavy..about 40#...it's a two person job for sure! But once you mount the bracket into the truss wood or something solid, bolting up the ext is easy. I will have three of these ceiling mounted extinguishers over each car - well, off to the side (in case, heaven forbid, one ever drops!). Then, I will have three smaller wall-mounted extinguishers on the walls.

I think they are nice looking, and highly touted by Griot's...feel free to call them and ask questions. This not aplug for Griot's (although they are great to deal with), but there simply isn't anywhere else I've found these.

Hope this helps. Feel free to e-mail me with other questions. I'll try to do all I can to make sure my '02 friends have their cars protected from fire!

John

Esty, that was a good move! I'd get another insurance company! These extinguishers are the "dry type", so no water worries. Easy clean up. Well, suppose to be anyway. If they save the building and cars, a little clean up is a small price to pay!

What kind of insurance do you have on your cars? For now, I have standard State Farm, but want to look at other options. Sort of confusing talking to other classic car owners (regarding which company and type of coverage).

Jim:

I have American Collectors Insurance, in New Jersey. They have been absolutely super to work with. When I had my house fire they paid me $500 for lost parts on each car I have insured with them. That helped ease the pain! I think they are underwritten by American Bankers of Florida.

Our friend John here has impeccable taste. The garage is just as nice as his cars! Dig the Steve McQueen pic on the far right :)

Funny thing is when I went into this thread I was expecting to see a pic of an M3 in the garage instead of a fire extinguisher thread. That would complete this fine stable of multipe 02's and M5.

I second John's advice on fire extinguishers. You can't have too many and make sure if you do have some that they are operational and charged. If the garage I had my car at was equipped as such perhaps I wouldn't be 02-less right now :(

Fire sucks.

Hey Mars! I tried e-mailing you last night, because I was thinking of you and your car fire, but the e-mail bounced. Did you change your e-mail address?

Anyway, I was wondering how you were faring with your car. Doesn't sound too good. Pitty...

E-mail me and give me an update.

Take Care,

John
