Subject: thoughts on Rear Seat Delete *WITH* child seat installed...

I am finally about done with the hellhouse and planning my situation with 02 and car seat for cooper, although in the market for another kid-hauler car (mostly for indy winters--salty roads).,... anyways, i ordered a car seat specifically with self-contained five-point harness (good for up to 65lbs) and am looking at my back seat area, and was thinking of just hard mounting the car seat into the rear seat area without the stock 02 seat back there. The seat i have is pretty trashed on the top/back, and i have this situation with the car battery that i originally moved to under the back seat, using an optima. problem is my optima died and a new one is $150++...

Im thinking that the seat-delete idea will give Cooper more legroom behind my way-back front seats (planning on putting him in the middle of the back seat area), and eliminate the need for a $160 optima battery since i can just keep using the "normal" liquid-acid batt that i have sitting in the under-seat area next to my existing/dead optima which i will soon drop off at recycling center.... the liquid acid one is now just sitting there but i can easily put it into a battbox and bolt it down, etc.

ok so, my concerns would be that ALL the padding cooper would get would be from the carseat, since it would be hard-mounted to the car schassis, possibly big concern... car seats are supposed to be clamped down pretty tight against normal seats, so they dont move, but there is still that bit of padding. This could be addressed simply by putting some padding between the "hard" mounted seat and the car chassis itself, which i would probably do for safety's sake.

The other thing is, is there anyone with a rear-seat delete carpet kit anymore? I have a carpet kit from only 02s, but im not too impressed with it, so id probably do my own seat delete kit if that is the only choice. i didnt get my only 02 kit direct from chris by the way, someone bought it and i bought it off them (possibly the vomit-brown color didnt look good when they got the kit, its actually grown on me now).

any thoughts? :)

Take this with the understanding that I race, but-

I'd think that a seat firmly anchored to the body would be better.
Less chance of coming loose, less flopping around if you were to roll,
less secondary impact if you had a sudden stop.

I replaced my back seat with carpetted plywood- 1/2" for the bottom,
1/4" for the back. Something like that would go a long way towards
covering up anything pointy or hard- edged to get hurt on or cut straps.

Under no circumstances would I have the battery back there with a kid-
there's a tiny- but real- chance of explosion, and acid everywhere is
a nightmare. Even in a box. Even an AGM. Especially in a rolling scenario...

just my .02,

good point.... funny since i just i saw optimas for $99 just now at a LAPS where I was buying a battbox. I think what I am going to do is mount the batt in the trunk, in the box. ive pretty much given up on having a sub box in the trunk since this car is so loud, although maybe that is a reason to *have* a boomin system to quote a great american. the sub box i had back there was soaking up water that had been leaking in from i dont know where anymore since i thought i got all the leaks. anyway i dumped the sub box and now just have my a/d/s/ 320is in the doors/dash. i think im just going to dump the stock seats and go with seat delete,,,, maybe... dont need to delete the seat if the batt is in the trunk.... sigh decisions..... ;-p

I was thinking about this too. I was thinking that I'd get some of the Latch points from a new car in a junk yard and mount them with high quality bolts and big washers behind the body. Then the car seat would use the "Latch" system to be secured. Maybe with some closed cell foam in-between.

Attached is a photo of my son riding in his seat on top of the seat delete. I ended up just putting a single waist belt in the middle and that holds the seat in place very tightly. Not quite sure what I'll do once he's outgrown this seat and moves to a booster. Possibly put the rear seat back in and install a shoulder belt?

that is basically the idea... the seat i bought has a built-in five-point harness, just like a racing seat more or less. then that is going to be mounted just like Grover's setup! i need to find a winter car soon... dont want to rust the 02 any faster than it already is!

great minds.... ;)
