Subject: pushing back the motor

My resto's engine has always sat a little too far forward; the fan has rubbed against the radiator on the passenger side and the tiny transmission mount has been sheared through.

I've blamed this on old motor mounts, and the passenger side mount was pretty squashed. So I hung the engine from a crane, pulled the old motor mounts, and am replacing both motor mounts and the tranny mount.

I can muscle the new driver's side mount into place, but the new passenger's side mount won't go line up with the bolts. I have the mount bolted to the block and I'm trying to attach it to the subframe, but the engine falls a little too far forward and the bolts won't line up with the holes on the mount. The engine falls ~0.5" too far forward.

I don't see any signs of subframe damage or bending anywhere. The driver's side mount isn't cracked and doesn't look bent. Even with the engine hoisted, the motor doesn't push backwards much (drive shaft is still attached). Does this just require a lot of muscle or is something wrong? Any tricks?

It's been a while for me but aren't the motor mount hles on the pax side slotted? I know you need that little curly Q thingey to keep the motor from moving forward under heavy braking.

Yeah, the holes in the mount are slotted, but it still sits too far forward. The curly "shoe horn" stopper that sits under the mount is slotted, too. I can get the bolts through it and get the mount behind the stopper, but the mount and engine are still too far forward.

Do I just need to get some leverage and force the engine backward? If so, any way one guy can do that without bending sheetmetal?

check the fender to radiator core support4 junction at the top of the engine compartment - you will probably see a bend or "buckle" that is causing the problem.

MAybe you can pull the dif back enough to get the clearance you need. I'd drop the driveshaft and get the engine in place then go from there.

I was thinking that would be the case, but was hoping not. Thanks.

don't drop the drive shaft

slacken the mounting of the diff, tranny, and center support bearing.

pry the engine back in to place so that you can put the bolts back into the mount.

I retighten everything from the front to back

tranny (two points)
center support bearing (with appropriate pre-load)--two points
differential (four on the body of the diff and two on the back plate)

make sure that the guibo is not distorted-- run it through a couple of revolutions with the tranny in neutral to make sure that there is no deformation or wobble.

Yup, to Pete and all-
loosen the diff mounts, then brace your feet on the body,
grab the diff, and pull for all you're worth.

If that doesn't work, use a pin punch to lever the mount backwards,
then install the other bolt.
I always have problems with that mount too- I think it's a feature.

That sounds better than dropping the drive shaft, so I'll give it a go. The guibo looks pretty good, like the PO replaced it relatively recently. It was a maltreated Arizona car, so most other rubber parts are cracked and hard.

So you're saying that it's like Microsoft software? Its not a bug, it's a feature!

Bill and Toby, thanks a lot. Your advice worked great. I've got two new motor mounts and a new tranny mount, and the drivetrain is straight and tight front to back. It fixed the fan rubbing problem, too.
