Can someone help me figure out the install of my MSD 6a
What needs to be bypassed. I have an un-molested 72 with all electrics in place including the ballast. Do I need to re hook up the ballast and all associated wires that where on the coil prior? Any help appreciated.

In case you don't have this:

http://www.msdignition.com/pdf/6%20series/6series.pdf

which is pretty much self-explanatory.

You will want to bypass the relay and ballast resistor, and connect the green wire from the ignition to the smaller red wire on MSD, and the black wire originally connected to the "-" side of the coil to the white wire on the MSD. BTW, you will need a tach adapter (the 8910, I believe) for your tach to work with the MSD.

At the coil you must only have the only the orange to + of the coil and black to - of the coil. Take the black wire from the coil setup you have now and bring it to the connector on the 6a for your tach connection. You dont have to buy any extra conversion part for tach operation. I am currenly running the 6a with the pertronix as a switch. Follow the instruction on pg 24 of document msd53775_6520 from msd website and you should be in good shape. I am using a black bosch coil with no resistor. This is used by 70's 320i and 80's volvo 240's.

heh heh-
ask and you shall recieve...
different answers, that is!
My tach's fed off the points, which also trigger an MSD 6AL.

The big red wire for the MSD comes directly from the battery,
and then it gets a little more complicated...

So, what kind of tach are you running?

Thanks all for the help. The basic install I had figured it was the extra wires when I was done which was my confusion. I used the green wire bypassing the ballast for my small red msd and petronix hook up. It is the green/red wire that I have not been able to source out and figure if I need to rehook it up to the coil like before. It kind of looks like it was power for the wiper fluid motor? is this right.

In the original setup, there is a green/red wire running from the ballast resistor to the "+" side of the coil, and also from the ballast bypass relay to the "+" side of the coil. You no longer need those wires if you bypass the ballast circuit and connect the MSD directly to the +12V circuit coming from the ignition switch (the green wire...).

got it. then the black wire from the negative side of the coil was the tach sensor wire?

The black wire connects the distributor to the coil, and typically is daisy-chained to the tach at the dizzy. The main purpose of the wire, however, is to provide the connection between the coil and dizzy.

There is a section in the MSD instructions about what to do in this situation.
