Subject: Air filter help

Well my air filter looks like it needs replacing and I had a few questions.

Are there different air filters for twin and single barrel carbs? I have a solex didta with auto choke (water/electric).

Is a K & N filter really better? I know it can be used forever but needs to be cleaned often. Would I be better just replacing the stock air filter frequently?

There are currently two air filters on ebay and they both say they fit 2002's but are different sizes.

Anyways, all help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!!!- Andrew Poon

You appear to have the "larger" air filter.
Attached is a pic of the smaller filter so you can judge.

I have the same size air filter. Rooting in my spares box says it is a Mann C3260. So - go for the one that is the same as that.

stay with the original paper cartridge .

Larger filter = more horse power - you have a good system already in place.

K&N and other oiled filters suck.

your new paper filter will last 5 - 10 years unless your in dirt road farm country, and sanded roads in winter time - even then - if you remove the filter every oil change and vacuum - blow it clear - they last forever
with no oil.....

Another good reason to stay with the factory setup is that it provides a cold air intake, which no K&N will without some kind of custom airbox.

Will do, soon as my upper strut bearings are in , and I'm ready to replace.

Thanks a lot for the help guys! Definitely helped me out.

What - no strut spacer comments?

Isn't the K&N element a stock replacement? - therefore the original cleaner housing and cold air plenum wouldn't be modified. I agree that the small chrome type unit that's popular with some folks gets rid of all the factory pieces.

Nice, original looking engine compartment. Good references for those "late model" owners who are missing things such as the fan shoud, cold air intake parts and plug wire holders. Not sure about the washer bottle location.

Plug wire holders and washer bottle location are stock ' 76 parts/locations. I would also suggest that when you get your nuts right you also chase the stud threads with a die to get the paint off there as well. Of course, when you move the aluminum spacer to the top of the fender some of the threads will be covered. You are going to move the spacer up on top aren't you?

Paper vs K&N. The stock paper filters better, K&N lets more dirt thru (proven face by an ISO filtration efficiency test). K&N per square inch if flow area has less restriction (less filtering) than paper, but there is lots more paper area so restriction is about the same (or you couldn't hit 115mph with it). You choose the right one!

Speaking of nuts, looks like the nuts on the air filter housing support should have the washers between the nut and support not between the support and shock mount.

I will be moving the spacers up on top, but I won't need to chase the threads because I'll be replacing the upper strut bearings anyways. If you look closely you can see a big crack in the passenger side one.

Thanks guys!

Subject: Air filters for the stock 2 bbl air cleaner (and 1 bbl too):

Years ago I took an old factory filter down to the local auto parts emporium and started pulling Detroit Iron filters out of boxes 'till I found one that fit.

A Purolator A40124 works nicely if you can get over its original fitment--Ford Mustang II and Fairmonts from the late 70s.

And for you one barrel folks, a Fram CA 189PL fits like the proverbial glove--and it was used on all six cylinder GM cars from the 60s except the Pontiac OHC Sprint engine, so should be easy to find.

Both are considerably cheaper and easier to find than the "correct" filters.

cheers
